Will my slow-cooker kill me?

I just got a slow cooker and am using it for the first time today. My mom talked me into it. But here is what I want to know: How is it that beef cooked slowly over 10 hours won't kill me?

I know a lot of people use slow cookers and DON'T die. Can I assume the the slow cooker will get hot enough to kill the bacteria?

1. well, think about it this way

if there's any steam at all that means 212 degrees, and that means dead bacteria

you'll be fine -- almost anything is killed by about 160 degrees or so
