Roosevelt Island Safari
Hello all. Every once in a while I like to get my sanity back here inside the Beltway by visiting the great outdoors. In my case that means walking down the hill to Roosevelt Island, which sits in the bend of the Potomac River just across from the Kennedy Center.

When I see something alive and kicking, I call it "wildlife" and try to take a shot of it with my cell phone camera. Here's an example shot of the tidal swamp, in which you can clearly not cee a pair of ducks and a blue heron in the center of the picture:

I could amaze you with other one-pixel gems like that. But every once in awhile, something magical happens, like this:

See him? See the magic? That's a four-point buck, with the velvet still on his antlers. Well, I got a better shot of his big brother, a six-pointer following behind the first:

See it yet? I took another shot, but I ran out of memory on my phone, so it only took a thumbnail:

So I had to upload the pictures I had taken and then erase them in order to take more pictures. Fortunately the subject, like most of the true DC locals, was polite and waited. See it yet? He's hiding behind the bush in the foreground:

Still don't see it? If you look really hard, you can just make him out in this one here:

Remember kids, the trick to getting good nature pictures with your cell phone in Washington, DC, is to forget to turn the sepia-tone setting off and get within twenty-four inches of the subject. Happens all the time here in the big city.
