Help! Windows Media Player
I was uploading some songs onto my laptop (I have XP) from CD when it froze, now when i try to use Media player and it has deleted all my playlists, won't let me make new ones and refuses to read CDs in my CD Drive. Anyone know what the cause/how to fix it is?

1. Do you have 9?
If you do, never heard of it having any problems.

If you don't have WM9, delete your current one and download it (it's much better anyways).

3. Oi.
Other than blind luck solving it (unless there a WMP pro on here), you're gonna have to bite the bullte on way or the other. Either you wait for your connection, reinstall xp (extreme), or install AOL.

Of course, if your comp or a friends comp has a burner... just have someone burn it onto a disk.

Sorry, I was tech savvy in the late 90's :(

5. It could possibly be a codec problem
I believe Micro$oft had planned to remove native support for such things as mp3 from their XP version of Media Player. It's not impossible you tried to load something heavily protected, and it responded by deleting things. Which codecs do you have installed? It could well make a difference.

As for reading your cd drive, I assume you've tried rebooting. If so, it could be you've run across something extremely vindictive, RIAA-style.

I use XP, and have since it first came out, and have had no problems listening to my music. I do NOT use any native M$ audio products, tho. I use an older version of WinAmp. That's something you may want to try instead of Media Player.

7. I was using winamp
til it went on the fritz back in June (for no apparent reason).

I was trying to upload an old Peter Paul and Mary CD, so I don't think it was heavily encrypted with anything.

I did try rebooting, it froze because I was doing too many things at once

6. You may be able to reinstall it
See if there is an I386 directory on your C: drive. If so the laptop may have all its windows install files loaded on the drive. You will be able to uninstall and reinstall media player then. Your playlists should be on the harddrive somewhere and you should be able to locate them by searching for the name you gave them. After the reinstall you should be able to import the playlists again.
