Ok, I'll say it if nobody else wants to..

I'm getting tired of people posting obviously political stuff in the lounge. These are not light-hearted posts that make fun of political points, but blatantly obvious posts that belong either in GD or somewhere else. I mostly lurk on the other areas of DU, and post occasionally when i feel i can add something(which is rare). I'm not slacking on the mods in anyway, but i'd like to see if anyone else feels like too many people just can't stand to see us being non-political in here and want to drag inappropriate subjects to the lounge.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

1. it doesn't happen that often

and when it does, if people aren't interested in reading it, they won't reply and the thread will sink to the bottom. But I haven't noticed it being a huge deal. Might just be me though.

The point of the lounge isn't to fill it up with pointless posts, but as long as it isn't overtly offensive, and not political, why would you think it wasn't an appropriate post?

that the posters are convinced the subject matter would be deleted in GD, and they haven't the respect necessary for these fora to rewrite them to make the posts acceptable. As a low-effort alternative, they're posted in the Lounge, which has a broader range of acceptable topics and formats.

That said, I do like seeing the Lounge tackle the occasional weightier topic.

6. I don't mind the occasional...

weighty topic in the Lounge either but I think you are dead on that too often political posts in here are by people who want to get around the moderators over in GD. I also prefer that if we're gonna tackle a deeper topic in here that it not be about politics since there are already plenty of forums for that here.

9. I agree absolutely.

I think many of the social, religious, and philosophical points mooted about in GD probably have a better home here in the Lounge. Sure, some aspects of healthcare, education, church & state, employment, racism in society, etc. are sufficiently political to belong in GD. But there's much more to be discussed in reference these topics and much of it is purview of the Lounge.

Hrm... I'm wondering if I should start a "Weighty Topic of the Week" Thread periodically...

11. I agree, but I think

the mods are usually pretty quick to move them to the proper forum. They have to do the same thing occasionally in GD, move threads that should obviously be in here.

7. I don't mind weightier..

I don't mind serious topics at all, I usually enjoy them. But seriousness isn't tied to politically relevant topics either. The lounge doesn't mean irreverant and pointless, just apolitical.

This probably isn't as big of a problem to many, I just see it as unneccessary bleed-over, especially from GD and campaign related stuff.

10. Many of them started out in GD today.

And ended up in the Lounge, because they weren't appropriate for GD either, but weren't offensive or against the rules. Happens all the time -- it's just more obvious when there's a big story out there, I guess.
