2. Okay, so here are my answers
1 - What is your ethnic background?

Irish, English, Scottish

2 - What is your hair color?

Red

3 - What color are your eyes?

Green or hazel, depending on the light

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English?

Barely. Some German, a very tiny amount of French and Spanish, and I took Latin for 5 years. Doesn't mean I know it, but it looks nice on a resume. :)

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin?

Yup--Mom and I went in 1992 to England, Scotland and Ireland

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where?

Not really. The districts of Boston with a large portion of Celts were on the other side of town. We lived in an area which was fairly diverse.

7 - Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?

I know some Irish and Scottish tunes, but mostly none of them by heart, unless they're old and short ones. My dad was a Newfoundlander (a goofie Newfie we used to call him) and I can recognize tunes but not all the words. I found some online that I barely remember from when I was younger, but I downloaded them to see if I could hum along with them.

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?

I used to do the Highland Fling, but never really got into the dancing on any real basis. Never got into the games.

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin?

Way too many to name

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background?

They should be proud of their heritage, regardless of what their background is, and should learn as much about it as possible.

12. Mine...
1 - What is your ethnic background?
Half Greek, qtr Irish, qtr German

2 - What is your hair color?
Brown/gray

3 - What color are your eyes?
Brown/hazel

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English?
I know a few phrases in French, Italian and Spanish

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin?
Only Ireland. I plan to go to Greece soon because I have many relatives there, but the trip would require at least 2.5 weeks to do properly and I don't get enough time off.

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where?
Not really, lily-white suburb. Gack.

7 - Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
I know some Irish songs, but not Greek.

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
I know a bit of Greek dancing.

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin?
Exactly? Well, one of my siblings is an actor if that counts.

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background?
Well, my children (if I have any) will be half Filipino, qtr Greek, and a pinch of Irish and German. So I suppose they'll probably be more in touch with their Filipino heritage because their father was born there. I think it's mildly important but I'm more interested in the world as a whole. I celebrate different cultures but I also celebrate what makes us the same.

18. Interesting questions
1 - What is your ethnic background?

I'm half Italian - my mother was the daughter of Italian immigrants. On my father's side, I'm English and Irish - the Irish from a mid-19th century immigrant, the English from 1630.

2 - What is your hair color? Dark brown.

3 - What color are your eyes? Hazel.

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English? No, not fluently. A smattering of phrases in Spanish and German.

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin? No.

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where? Well, yeah, but it's a pretty homogenous origin. New England is full of English/Irish and there are quite a few Italians as well.

7 - Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin? No Italian.

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin? Again, no Italian.

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin? I would imagine but I don't know offhand.

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background? I think it's important, mainly because I want them to understand that America is a land of immigrants and that unless one is purely Native American, their ancestors came from somewhere else at some time which is why this country is the way it is. The people who settled it were people who weren't afraid of a challenge, or of trying something new. I think that's what gives us much of our energy.

20. I have the most boring set of answers ever...
1. Mostly mick, with a little Welsh thrown in.
2. Brown, but prematurely greying.
3. Blue
4. Um..bad German, and a (very) little bit of Japanese.
5. Sadly enough, no. But I live 20 minutes from Boston...there's really no reason for me to travel see Irish people.
6. Nope, I was actually raised in a neighborhood full of Italian-Americans in New Jersey. It wasn't till years later, going through my elementary school yearbook that I suddenly realized this.
7. Um, no.
8. I can drink you under the table if necessary. Does that count?
9. Yeah, like every single politician that came out of Mass.
10. Not particularly. My wife is French Canadian and Native American, which is much cooler. Luckily, my kids take after her in terms of skin tone, so they don't burn as easily.

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background? Extremely.
Otherwise they're liable to fall for artificial identification scams that depend on patrilinear accidents
("our last name is Italian, therefor we're really Italian") or intellectually dishonest political moments (KKKers, reparations-for-slavery, English-only laws, and regressive taxation policies) . Fortunately for my family, we happen to come from an ethnic background that encompasses practically every other ethnicity in the world, so there's not a single pride festival we can't participate in.

26. Vive La France!
1 - What is your ethnic background?
Maternal grandfather: Cornish (Celt), English, some Am. Indian. MGM: French, Norman French, German. PGF: Yankee, PGM: French Canadian. In short, the only thing keeping me from being the whitest dude in the world is Finland.

2 - What is your hair color? cranial-brown, facial-brown with red and blond bits.

3 - What color are your eyes? Like a royal blue like my mother's mother, not a grey blue like my father and his brother.

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English? No. (Thanks grandmother & public school) Know a few bits of French and German

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin? Yes, England and United States. (Yankee part of the family has been here since 1620. Can't really call them English after 400 years in the New World. Also, there is a bit of indiginous blood there too.)

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where? Leicester, at least during HS. Everyone was from a mixed background with a lot of people with French names or Yankee.

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin? Yeah, head games and the family favorite, let's all get stinking drunk.

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin? Yankees, Englishmen and Frenchmen? Yeah, there might be a few.

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background? Why do you assume I have children. We decided not to do so. We have no reason to add that expense or burden to our lives and the one thing this Earth does not need is more of us.

32. Mine:
1 - What is your ethnic background?
Russian and Polish. Jewish.*

2 - What is your hair color?
Brown.

3 - What color are your eyes?
Brown.

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English?
Marginally -- bits and pieces of Spanish, Esperanto and Mandarin.

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin?
No, although I have been to a city with the greatest numbers of people of my ethnic origin in (the world? outside Israel?)...anyway, it was New York.

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where?
I didn't live in an exclusively Jewish neighborhood, but there were lots of others of Eastern European Jewish extraction. Buffalo Grove, IL.

7 - Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
Sure. Not well.

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
Sure. Not well.

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin?
I thought we ran Hollywood and Wall Street.

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background?
I'm a "food Jew." I'll cook the appropriate foods at the appropriate time of year. As for the Russian/Polish part, I'd like my kids to know where they come from (me as well as their dad), but I'm not necessarily going to send them to Motyl, Russia (a small town where many of my ancestors are from) on an exchange program or something.

* I do consider Jewish to be an ethnicity as well as a religion in that I'm very ethnically Jewish but not at all religiously so.

34. I'm a Scandanippian!
  1. What is your ethnic background?
Japanese, Norwegian and Swedish: I'm a Scandanippian!

  2. What is your hair color?
Black with a few brown highlights.

  3. What color are your eyes?
    Brown

  4. Do you speak any languages besides English?
Nah, but I can mumble a couple phrases in a few other languages. :)

  5. Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin?
Spent eight years of my childhood in Japan.

  6. Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where?
I grew up on American military bases overseas. On such bases, halfbreed mutts like me were as common as sand on a beach. It wasn't until we moved to Florida and dad decided to move off base that people started looking at me like some kind of bizarre-looking bug at the local natural history museum.\

  7. Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
Hum, maybe, sing, no, unless you count anime theme songs or ABBA tunes.

  8. Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
Does jankenpo (rock, paper, scissors) count?

  9. How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background?
Pretty important, but I can tell you from personal experience that you don't want to feed Scandinavian-American kids lutefisk (aged fish prepared with lye) unless you want to permanently traumatize them. So of course many Scandinavian-American families serve it at holiday times.

Ugh. Now I brought up lutefisk. I'm going to have bad flashbacks for a while. If you need me, I'll be in that corner curled up in the fetal position and twitching uncontrollably.

62. Same deal for every Scandahoovian I know.
That's how you separate the real Scandanavian-Americans from people who just happen to be descended from Scandanavians. Say the word "lutefisk." If they cringe, twitch, throw up, or (worse) express interest, then you've got a real Scandanavian-American on your hand. If you don't get some fairly extreme reaction, then you're dealing with a mere descendent who is out of touch with his or her heritage (and probably better off).

35. Mexican-American
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 01:43 PM by rene moon
1 - What is your ethnic background?
Mexican, Spanish, Native American, a little French too

2 - What is your hair color?
Brown

3 - What color are your eyes?
hazel brown

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English?
Not really--if you dont count my horrible Spanish skills

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin?
Yes--Mexico is about 45 minutes away!

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where?
Not really--grew up on the "east side" of town. Though a few of the neighbors kids were of Mexican heritage as well (we bonded as being Mexican kids who spoke no Spanish).

7 - Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
Yes, I know some songs by heart

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?
Yes

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin?
Yes, quite a few

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background?
I believe it is extremely important. My mom grew up in a time where speaking Spanish was discouraged by the school system and she didnt teach her own children the language but taught us to be proud of our heritage---as a way to get back at the "white people" (ha). Now as an adult, I wish I spoke Spanish fluently. When I have children, they will learn Spanish and be proud of who they are.

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background? My ancestors have been in the US anywhere from 200 to almost 400 years (some on the Mayflower on my dad's side), so individual culture has long been filtered out. My grandma can cook some Swedish dishes (which I don't like) and basically any culture has long been washed away. My kids are 1/2 Irish on their dad's side, but he grew up with French Canadian foster parents and is a Buddhist. My culture (mostly English, old-time WASP) is the culture that pretty much shat upon everyone else who came to this country after (and the Indians) and run most things anyway. I guess it just doesn't excite me much.

55. Fun questions! Here are my answers:
1 - What is your ethnic background? By birth, I am Russian and British; by adoption, Norwegian

2 - What is your hair color? Blonde (with quite a bit of covered-up grey!)

3 - What color are your eyes? Green

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English? Some Spanish, and am trying to learn French

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin? I used to live in England, and have also been to Norway (among several other European countries)

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where? Yes, many Scandihoovians in Iowa; grew up in Decorah (BEAUTIFUL spot! About 35 miles west of the Mississippi River, bluffs and trout streams and woodland...it's gorgeous)

7 - Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin? I don't know any British or Russian stuff, but I know several Christmas carols in Norwegian, and I can sort of muddle through the Norski National Anthem

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin? Yes, I have done several folk dances from Norway; we used to do them in gym class, and there is a Nordic dance troupe in Decorah that I tried out for as a kid

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin? King Olav, the late monarch, whom I got to meet as a child (presented him with a bouquet of flowers as part of the official welcome to him when he visited Decorah back in the late 1960s)

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background? Not as important as many other things, but I do think one's ethnic heritage is something of which to be informed and proud! But I also think it's crucial to raise them with awareness of others' cultures and to respect them. It's one of the best lessons I ever learned from my parents. We had people of many races, ethnic backgrounds and cultures in our home when I was a child, and my folks always had me look up the country in the encyclopedia, learn about their land, make some placemats and table decorations related to that country, and then my mom would serve food from that country, in preparation for the visit. I really respect them for that, and feel very privileged to have grown up with pride in my own heritage, but not to the point where I believed us to be in any way superior to those from other backgrounds.

57. Okay
1 - What is your ethnic background?

Primarily Cajun

2 - What is your hair color?

Brown (before I shaved my head)

3 - What color are your eyes?

Brown

4 - Do you speak any languages besides English?

There are other languages?

5 - Have you ever been to a country of your ethnic origin?

Canada is partly the country of origin of the Cajuns, so yes.

6 - Were you raised in a neighborhood comprised of others from your ethnic origin? Where?

I guess. We never really talked about it that much. I'm originally from Baton Rouge (don't be fooled. Baton Rouge is NOT Cajun), but I'm now living in the middle of Cajun Country. Heck, there's a bayou across the street from me.

7 - Can you sing any traditional songs from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?

Mai yeah!

8 - Can you do any dances, games, etc, from the group that makes up your ethnic origin?

Nope. I'm handicapped, and there are no Cajun games (unless you count pock pock). Oh wait. I take that back. I drink alcohol. :)

9 - Are there any famous people who share your ethnic origin?

Many.

10 - How important do you think it is for your children to be aware of their ethnic background?

I don't have children

Hope this helps :)

3. Brown

4. No, but I could probably find us a toilet or a pen in France if I had to.

7. Yes

8. Yes

9. Yes

10. I think it's important. Both sides of my family are very proud of their backgrounds, as well as very proud to have made it to the US. (My grandparents on both sides were the first in the family born in the States, so we're relatively new here by some standards, though of course not by others.) Now, I don't think it's so important that I'd refer to myself or my theoretical kids as Polish-Americans or what have you, but I think it's important to know your family history if you can, to know who or what you came from, to pass down stories and traditions--all that stuff--as you go on making your own stories and traditions in your family.

Important to be aware of family history and collective memory, biological or adopted. If I adopted a child of another ethnicity, I would embrace that history to a certain extent and give them that connection, as well, since others will perceive them as part of that group

70. Here are mine:
1. Anglo-Welsh-Scots-Irish-Franco-American, or if that's too much, "Celtic". B-)
2. Brown (What's left of it.)
3. Also brown.
4. German.
5. Yep. All of them.
6. No. I grew up on Army posts. People of ALL ethnic backgrounds. I liked that.
7. I can sing "Suo-Gan", a Welsh lullaby, in the original Welsh, but only phonetically.
8. Nope. Can't dance. Several local ordinances have been enacted enjoining me from dancing.
9. You mean my particular mix? Can't think of any; it's a pretty eclectic grouping. :P
10. Not very. The Scots fight the English, the English fight the French, the Welsh fight the Scots, and the Irish fight EVERYBODY. But inside me, they all get along. Getting along is what I'd like my children to know.

Irish, Italian, Polish, Russian Jewish, maybe some English

2 - Brown
3 - Blueish
4 - Spanish badly
5 - Yes - Italy and if the English part is true also England
6 - Well ah I guess it was a typical American Suburb with many different types of American Mutts I think :)
7 - Haha No (The laugh is at myself or rather the thought of me attempting to sing something like that)
8 - No
9 - Well considering the number of ethic roots I think it's safe to say yes...with my particular mix? There's know way to know
10 - Mildly - I'd like my son to be aware of the fact he has ancestors from a diverse selection but he's American. It's been a few centuries of mixing in this land so I think we can start thinking of ourselves as "American" in an ethic sense as well as a national sense. To put it another way, he and I recently went hiking in a nearby conservation area, we climbed a moderate hill with a nice view of the surrounding land and I said to him. "America is your nation but this - " indicating the view " Is your country."
