If so, please tell this maybe-newbie what your experience has been.

Thanks!

1. Yes, but not in a class
I used to dance and had lost some flexibilty after having my kids, so I bought myself a dvd. I really like it.

Anything specific you want to know?

3. I have done Hatha yoga for almost two years and just started Yin yoga...
If you want to improve your health, this is a must! It's also a wonderful tool for injuries. I dislocated my knee cap almost a year ago, and I firmly believe I was able to avoid surgery and recovered quickly in part to the yoga I was practicing before then.

If you can find a class you enjoy - go for it!

6. "improve your health" -- that's the point
My doc recommended it. After she read me the riot act ("lose weight or die")

thank you, Writer

14. There is a woman in my class who used to be "morbidly" obese...
who has lost to my visual estimation about 200 or more lbs. since I started. It's not a weight loss exercise, that's for sure, but it's good for overall health and mental fitness.

4. I used to do it for credit in college.
I had to take a year of "Movement for Actors." Basically we did yoga and pilates. It's a good workout. Pilates really strengthens your stomach.

I enjoyed it. I'd still do it but all the yoga places around me are super expensive (like $20/class).

7. Well, just drive on down to MD once or twice a week. . . .
$8 per class or 4 for $30 at my doc's office.

Sorry.

I was kidding. Isn't it a 5-hr drive from NJ to MD?

5. i love it
I've been practicing for 6 years now and am trying to boost my practice to am hour a day everyday (sometimes I slack and only do a few sun salutes). I recommend that everybody I know do yoga.

9. when i was a kid
Edited on Wed Jul-12-06 09:03 PM by pitohui
honestly i think it's a waste of time

when i got older i switched to lifting and i saw a thousand percent improvement in my pain management issues

however, all bodies are different so if it works for you, why not

you won't lose weight doing yoga since it doesn't burn any noticeable calories, if weight loss is the goal you need to be looking at something else, doctors are nice people but they are not so knowledgeable abt exercise/nutrition sometimes

18. weight loss is a goal but not the most important one
Health is my primary goal. I can't get healthy if I can't exercise, and I can't exercise if I can't move. Right now my range of motion everywhere is extremely limited by tight, disused muscles. Yoga is loosening me up.

11. Yes.
I've been practicing for years and I love it. It can help with stress reduction and general well-being while improving your strength. :)

12. I love it
I have taken a number of different classes but due to work constraints now mostly do it on my own with DVDs, or just by thinking of what would feel good! It's really amazing though it took me a good deal of time to be able to really focus on my breath and my body, without other thoughts crowding in. Now I look forward to my "time off" a few times a week. I used to dance regularly, and getting out of the rigidity of ballet has been a real challenge.

Actually, my colleagues have a yoga instructor come to the office twice a week for lessons. I try to join in a few days a month but the timing is weird (starts at 4 in the afternoon). It has been really great for everyone in the office -- all different shapes, sizes, ages and ability. That's the great thing about yoga -- it really is for everyone. I highly recommend giving it a shot!

13. Yes, started young, self taught from TV and books.
Took a class, but mainly have done it on my own.

It helps me feel good, relaxed, and flexible.

15. After reading Jess Stearn's book "Yoga, Youth, & Reincarnation" at age 15
I added "doing" yoga as a prelude to my ballet workout routine. (back in 1969)

I still have the book, have done yoga off and on over the years some. The best thing I have gotten out of it are the breathing techniques...can lower heart rate, enter a more calm state of mind, become focused. I also like the stretches. But the Lotus position...???? No way! Haven't got the knees for it anymore :D

If you're interested, here's a link to that book:

19. I haven't done yoga in a while
but I do remember enjoying it very much. I'd like to start up again, but none of the classes offered by my gym fit very well w/ my workout schedule.

I remember really having to concentrate on what my body was doing--which was really great for stress relief. You can leave your worries behind and just concentrate on your body.

I also remember that if you couldn't do a particular pose (due to fitness or physical limitation), there was usually a variation that the instructor would suggest. This made me feel like I belonged in the class, even when my fitness level was not as high as others in the same class.

I give yoga a

20. No, but I "do" a Yoga Instructor
Yoga rules.

Actually, I did Yoga for a year or so. My biggest obstacle was tight hamstrings, but, it's not about how fully stretched you get, but how much more you stretch incrementally. If you are a good studio, you will be treated gently and with a lot of nurturing.....

21. Off & on & I love it
The yoga instructor at my current gym just left & as yet, no replacement.

But, I do know Sun Salutation 1, so on the days I don't go to the gym, I try to do at least 5. When I don't do yoga, I have problems with my right hip (car accident injury), but after 2 Sun Salutations, it's stretched out & not hurting.

Keep up the good work, Bertha! It will pay off!

I'll have to read the responses of those who have done it.
