I thought it was much better. Though the origanl was groundbreaking, I still like the newer one.

20. I'll second Dawn of the Dead
Much better production values than NOTLD, and nerve-wracking as hell.

3. I Walked With a Zombie
Hard to find this one - Jacques Tourneur film, based on Jane Eyre, from the 40's (if I recall correctly). At times, this one feels almost like a French New Wave film from 20 years later. If you can't find that one, then Dawn of the Dead (see above) is a close second, followed by the original Night of the Living Dead.

4. I Walked With a Zombie
I agree, this was a really good film, very erie. Anything produced by Val Lewton had great atmosphere. Lewton never had any budget, so he had to use creativity to make his films work. Don't miss.

9. read the book - the movie was considerably "sexed-up"...and even
the book's author was way off-base with much of the voudoun (yes, I do know from direct experience)...

Movies about zombies??? I'm not sure what the BEST one is, but the film with the MOST zombies is whatever film features the most rePubes...

More on "Serpent & Rainbow"
http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/haiti/bookreviews/davisrev.htm
<snip...>
As if his pharmacological conclusions were not controversial enough, Davis wrote a overheated and fictionalized book about his time in Haiti that reads like the first draft for a Hollywood movie with Davis himself as an Indiana-Jones-type hero. This book, titled The Serpent and the Rainbow, did, indeed, become the basis for the latest Hollywood insult to Haiti, a movie of the same title released to theaters on February 5, 1988, and appropriately made by the director of "A Nightmare on Elm Street."

This book has to read to fully appreciate what Davis is about in his second book, Passage of Darkness, which is advertised as the scholarly product. Leaving aside the pharmacological controversy, the arguments of Davis hang by very thin threads and are related to his efforts to read into Haitian history and contemporary society more sensational and strange happenings than are actually there.

17. HAHA, I had one idiot friend in high school
who insisted that since the movie started with "Based on a true story", it HAD to be true otherwise the movie ratings people wouldn't let them put that line in the beginning!
