Creative cooking suggestions! Here are the ingredients you have ...
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 11:12 AM by Flaxbee
to work with:

1 bag frozen shrimp
jasmine rice
chick peas
onions
fresh ginger
fresh lime
garlic

plus an assortment of standard spices, possibly even some curry powder somewhere.

What do you make?

Husband is usually the cook in the house, he's got a magic way with food, but he's got a galloping sinus headache and I'd like to make something at the very least decent, at best delicious. Help!

edit: if you're so inclined to offer recipe assistance, please also give me time suggestions, measurements, etc. I am one of those unfortunate people who is paralyzed w/o detailed cooking directions. Thanks.

3. cook the rice and combine with the chick peas and onions,
make a sauce with the ginger, lime and galic ( do you have any white wine?)
cook the shrimp according to instructions.

Serve the shrimp over the bed of rice concoction, drizzle the sauce over...

the rest of the bottle of white wine...

and you have a meal...

7. that's quite often what I do...
but we've eaten out the last few days and I'm sick of restaurant food; thought I'd try to do something yummy on my own. Now, if it turns into shrimp sludge or something, then we'll go for a pizza. ;-)

5. Do you have white wine
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 11:31 AM by RagingInMiami
butter? Olive oil?

If you do, I would saute the shrimp in garlic, lime, wine, olive oil and add some butter towards the end.

You can toss in the onions as well.

8. no white, but some red or some vodka
also no butter -- unbeknownst to me, husband used the LAST of it yesterday. Hmph.

could I sub vodka for white wine?

15. It won't be a direct substitution, but it would add flavor to it
Don't be afraid to experiment

6. Does your collection of standard ingredients include soy sauce?
Edited on Sun Jul-16-06 11:38 AM by deucemagnet
Soy sauce, minced ginger and garlic, and some white wine (if you have it) would make a nice sauce for a shrimp and onion stir fry. A little corn starch would thicken the sauce nicely, if you have it. I'd save the chick peas for another day -- they don't really fit in a stir fry.

On edit: A little fresh lime juice would work well in a stir fry sauce, also.

9. yup, have soy, just no white wine, only red or vodka.
would either of those go with the soy sauce-based sauce?

10. Ditch the chick peas and the onion
Marinate the shrimp in the lime and garlic (and some hot sauce if you have any). Cook it up in some butter in a pan until the shrimp are cooked. Salt to taste.

Serve over rice.

11. OK...here's what I would do...
Sautee the shrimp in one tbs of cooking oil (if you have it) and the juice of the lime (two limes if you have two). Cook only until the grey turns red. Remove shrimp and set aside.
Chop the onion and add to the oil/lime in pan along with shredded ginger, add two cloves of garlic and sautee until the garlic and onion are opaque. Add one cup of water and one tbs of curry powder bring to boil then lower flame and simmer until it thickens a little. Add the shrimp back in.

In a separate pot cook one cup of jasmine rice - I am assuming you don't need instructions on how to make the rice :D

13. assume nothing!
but yes, I can manage the rice... ;-)

have cooking oil, have two limes...

one question - how much ginger should I use? I have entire chunks of ginger root that I need to peel and shred -- maybe two nodes of ginger (one chunk having 4-6 nodes)?

16. I'd just make the rice, saute the shrimp with a little butter and VERY
little garlic, and serve on top of the rice. No need to get any fancier than that...simple is often the best!
Good luck and good eating with whatever you make :-)
