Any ING Direct customers here? Thoughts?
I'm looking for a savings account, and my guitarist highly recommended ING Direct. It looks like their interest rates are significantly higher than those of our current bank. Anybody here had any experience with them? They get quite a good rating on epinions.com.

1. I don't use them personally but I've heard nothing bad

Do some more research though as there's even better rates than theirs. All my banking has been done online for the past three years with no problems.

Also try HSBC at: http://www.hsbcdirect.com/

HSBC is advertising 5.05% while ING is at 4.35%
My local credit union is giving me 5.30% for an 18 month CD.

Serious-ass Bush Supporters

ING, on the otherhand, is pretty neutral.

7. I don't use them personally
Just noticed their online rates. As I mentioned, my local has both beat by almost a half percent and it's a local credit union that invests locally by their quarterly reports.

2. They are great. They were started with the consumer in mind,

no fees, rates move up with (but lag) Fed Funds rates, and you can have money auto-deducted from your bank account on a scheduled basis.

Caveat: federal regs limit withdrawals from online savings accounts to two per year.

Some other online copycats offer higher rates (emigrantdirect.com, hsbcdirect.com, etc.), but I have heard some bad things about service.

The Orange Savings account currently has an APR of 4.35%.

3. Federal regs question...
When you say "withdrawals," does that include transfers to my regular checking account?

10. Guess what? I was very wrong. 6 withdrawals per month is the limit.
They do include transfers back into your checking account.

I'll edit my original answer if there's still time.

12. Anybody know of others that are blue or neutral with better rates?
Alas, my wife is concerned about the final monetary gain (as we don't have much), and would prefer the higher APY of the HSBC Direct.

18. 4.88% is pretty tasty.
And if the Fed raises again in August, that interest rate will enjoy a bump.

Nice work.

28. If I have a balance, I pay it off on the next bill.
But yes, your point is well taken that it's best to have no credit card debt, because borrowing at such high rates is a loser's game.

Still I have no problem with people automatically accumulating savings while simultaneously paying down a small credit card debt. Psycho Suze may disagree, but better to have cash on hand for emergencies, etc., than to be forced to further ramp up credit card debt when faced with a sudden need.

It's so nice when that goddamned debt is finally gone.

At least a student loan is an investment in something, so it's not such a bad thing.

17. I have an account with them
They've been fine so far--I like the recent 4+% rate and it's easy to transfer money to the account and from the account. Haven't had any problems. The only drawback was when I called customer service because I had a question about my account, the rep, although very friendly, weasled around to trying to pitch me a refi mortgage, even though we had only bought our house a few months before. The drawback? Variable rate. NUH-UH. But she remained friendly even after I said no.

So, overall, I'd say they're good!

:hi:

So of course I was a customer

ING Direct is their biggest money maker - no branches so no overhead. That being said their rate has been like 2 to 6% - so if you have any debt or credit you will still be losing money.

Just be aware that moving money out takes an extra couples days to reach your checking account.

29. I have an Orange Savings account and I love it
I have ten dollars automatically deposited weekly - doesn't sound like much but it adds up. I also dump any surprise amounts I get - gifts of money, tax return checks, vacation checks, etc. - into my account. The interest adds up nicely and what I like is the fact that the money is not so easy to access that I blow it but available if I really, truly need it.

I've saved a couple of grand this way and I'm quite happy with it.
