Anybody know how long....
Yogurt can sit between refrigeration and still be ok to eat? My daughter and I went shopping after work, on the promise that we could go to the park after we did the shopping, dropped it off, and fed the dog. We had a quick snack at the co-op while the food sat on the cement floor, maybe 15 minutes. Then we came home, went to the park, came back home and I realized the food had been sitting on the table the whole time, yogurt and all. Maybe an hour out at home.

Think it's still good to eat? I know I'm overly paranoid about this since I've worked in food service, so I figured I'd get some other opinions.

1. Isn't yogurt some kind of fungus or something anyway?
Hell, it'll probably be better for it.

Truthfully, I used to have a certification for food services, and I think it would be just fine.

4. Not fungus, Bacterial Culture. But like all dairy products..
it needs to be kept refrigerated. Still Yogurt like cheese is fairly hardy and I'm sure it's still OK.

Just don't blame me if you get sick though ;)

2. I wouldn't eat it ....
Q. I left a new container of yogurt in the trunk of my car for several hours and it was quite warm. It is my understanding that yogurt does not really "spoil". Can still I refrigerate it and safely eat it?

A. No, you need to discard the yogurt. It is a perishable food that requires refrigeration. Opened yogurt should be used within 7 to 10 days.

3. It didn't actually get warm, though....
The containers were still cool when I put them back into the fridge. Not cold, but cool. Hrm.

6. y'know, honestly it's hard to say...
I had a small single serving container of yogurt in my lunch box. It sat overnight. I had a freezer pak in the box and so it stayed somewhat cool, not cold but not warm either. I ate it the next day. I used the rationale that the freezer pak probably kept it 'safe'.

Hard call. I HATE throwing out food.

if it's still cool ....well, gee .. dunno

5. It's fine.
It's not in even refrigerated in some countries. An hour or so isn't that long, especially if you said it still felt cool.

7. Your yogurt should be safe.

It would have to be left out about 4 hours to be dangerous. 40 degrees is the magic # for compromising cold foods' safety. (I work in a food program and am required to temp everything when I receive it; when I cook it; when I serve it. For quality/safety control, I also send test meals out on the delivery route and temp the hot/cold when it's returned to me}.

9. You're very welcome.
It's perplexing when it's not something you deal with often! And it is important to be aware of food safety - no sense in taking risks that are avoidable.
