What should the Dem's theme song be for 2004?
I can't remember what it was in 2000. I know Clinton/Gore used Don't Stop by Fleetwood Mac. Bush used Right Here Right Now by Van Halen (even more reason to hate them).

So, what should the Dems use in 2004?

I nominate Power to the People - John Lennon.

Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

Say we want a revolution
We better get on right away
Well you get on your feet
And on the street

Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

Oh, when your man is working for nothing
You better give 'em what they really own
We got to put you down
When we come into town

Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

I'm gonna ask you comrade and brother
How do you treat your own woman back home
She got to be herself
So she can give herself

Singing power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on

Oh well, power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people
Power to the people, right on.

Fits RIGHT into what's going on right now in Bushmerica.

Thoughts?

1. How about ...
We're not going to take it ...
No, we're not going to take it ...
We're not going to take it ...
Any more!

Can't recall who sings it. Nor all the words. Sorry.

21. Twisted Sister - I like that.
Not so staid. I also like it where it says:

We're right,
we're free,
we'll fight -
you'll seeeeee!

Great choice!

3. Marvin Gaye "What's Going On"
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 03:02 AM by 94114_San_Francisco
What's Going On
Marvin Gaye

Mother, mother, there's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother, there's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today, hey

Father, father, we don't need to escalate
War is not the answer, for only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

CHORUS #1:
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh what's going on, what's going on
Yeah, what's going on, ah, what's going on
Ahhh....

Mother, mother, everybody thinks we're wrong
Ah but who are they to judge us
Simply 'cos our hair is long
Ah you know we've got to find a way
To brind some understanding here today

CHORUS #2:
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
What's going on, yeah what's going on
Tell me what's going on, I'll tell you what's going on

edit: oops, the cut and paste had a typo...
I know this isn't a serious choice for a campaign in "2004 America" but don't flame me for a bit of nostalgia. :hi:

7. How about Queen's "We Are The Champions"?
Personally, I always liked Gore's pick of "Let The Day Begin" by The Call. It was, lyrically, a great platform song:

Here's to the babies in a brand new world
Here's to the beauty of the stars
Here's to the travellers on the open road
Here's to the dreamers in the bars

Here's to the teachers in the crowded rooms
Here's to the workers in the fields
Here's to the preachers of the sacred words
Here's to the drivers at the wheel

Here's to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin
Here's to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin

Here's to the winners of the human race
Here's to the losers in the game
Here's to the soldiers of the bitter war
Here's to the wall that bears their names

Here's to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin
Here's to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin

Here's to the doctors and their healing work
Here's to the loved ones in their care
Here's to the strangers on the streets tonight
Here's to the lonely everywhere

Here's to the wisdom from the mouths of babes
Here's to the lions in the cage
Here's to the struggles of the silent war
Here's to the closing of the age.

Here's to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin
Here's to you my little loves with blessings from above
Now let the day begin ... let the day start

9. Boom Boom, Out Go The Right?
How about changing the lyrics from this classic:

Recorded in 1955 for the Chess label in Chicago as per "Little Walter and his Jukes".

BOOM BOOM, OUT GO THE LIGHTS (Lewis)

No kiddin'
I'm ready to fight
I've been lookin' for my baby all night
If I get her in my sight
Boom boom! out go the lights

I thought I treat my baby fair
Now she's kiddin' all in my hair
If I get her in my sight
Boom boom! out go the lights

- solo -

No kiddin'
I'm ready to go
When I find her boy don't you know
If I get her in my sight
Boom boom! out go the lights

I never been so mad before
When I found out she ain't mine no more
If I get her in my sight
Boom boom! out go the lights

10. Eve of Destruction
Edited on Wed Jul-30-03 03:54 AM by JackSwift
Barry McGuire

Eve Of Destruction

the eastern world it is exploding
violence flaring and bullets loading
you're old enough to kill but not for voting
you don't believe in war but what's that gun you're toting
and even jordan river has bodies floating

but you tell me
over and over and over again my friend
ah you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

my blood's is so mad it feels like coagulating
i'm sitting here just contemplating
i can't twist the truth it knows no regulation
and a handful of senators don't pass legislation
busing alone can't bring interegation
when human respect is disintegrating
the whole fucking world is just too frustrating

but you tell me
over and over and over again my friend
ah you don't believe
we're on the eve of destruction

(snip)

let it rip! IIRC it was 1965, the year that was. The more things change, the more they stay the same. I never thought I'd live to see the U.S. in a more fucked up war than Vietnam.

12. I like "Change of the Guard" by Steely Dan

If you listen you can hear it
It's the laughter in the street
It's the motion in the music
And the fire beneath your feet
All the signs are right this time
You don't have to try so very hard
If you live in this world
You're feelin' the change of the guard

All the cowboys and your neighbors
Can you swallow up your pride
Take your guns off it you're willin'
And you know we're on your side
If you wanna get thru the years
It's high time you played your card
If you live in this world
You're feelin' the change of the guard

13. Clinton adopted "These Are Days" by 10,000 Maniacs at one point.
(I think it still works.)

These are days you'll remember.
Never before and never since, I promise,
Will the whole world be warm as this.
And as you feel it, you'll know it's true
That you are blessed and lucky.
It's true that you are touched by something
That will grow and bloom in you.

These are days you'll remember.
When May is rushing over you with desire
To be part of the miracles you see in every hour.
You'll know it's true that you are blessed and lucky.
It's true that you are touched by something
That will grow and bloom in you.
These are days.

These are the days you might fill with laughter until you break.
These days you might feel a shaft of light
Make its way across your face.
And when you do you'll know how it was meant to be.
See the signs and know their meaning.
It's true, you'll know how it was meant to be.
Hear the signs and know they're speaking to you, to you.

16. WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN
And this is a strong powerful 9 minute song to boot!

Won't Get Fooled Again
We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that's all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they are flown in the next war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
Though I know that the hypnotized never lie
Do ya?

There's nothing in the streets
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Are now parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Meet the new boss
Same as the old boss

22. United We Stand by Judas Priest
I was somewhat surprised that it wasn't latched onto after 9/11.

Look around
They're moving in
Hold your ground
When they begin

We can do it
We can do it and if they wanna they can try
But they'll never get near
Then they can get out of here

Gonna keep on driving
Never stop

United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all

So keep it up
Don't give in
Make a stand
We're gonna win

We can do it
We can do it and if they wanna they can try
But they'll never get near
Then they can get out of here

Gonna keep on driving
Never stop

United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all

So keep it up

United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all

United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all

United, united, united we stand
United we never shall fall
United, united, united we stand
United we stand one and all

It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.

Hey little sister what have you done
Hey little sister who's the only one
I've been away for so long (so long)
I've been away for so long (so long)
I let you go for so long

It's a nice day to start again (come on)
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.

(Pick it up)

Take me back home

There is nothin' fair in this world
There is nothin' safe in this world
And there's nothin' sure in this world
And there's nothin' pure in this world
Look for something left in this world

Start again
Come on

It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again.
It's a nice day for a white wedding
It's a nice day to start again

26. "Peace Song" by Shawn Phillips
Listen here:http://www.etsmtl.ca/pers/jboisono/shawnphillips/mp3/PeaceSong2.mp3

May peace prevail on Earth
May peace be in our homes and countries
In these troubled times we live in
We will see the dark come light, Oh
May peace prevail on Earth tonight
In our lives

May our missions be accomplished
May our deeds be won with joy
And we will thank the guardian deities
Thank the guardian spirit force, Oh
May the ship of peace be on her course
Toward all shores

And the sages make their statements
And the statesmen have their say
But we will learn that wisdom comes
From mistakes we've made upon the way, Oh
May peace be here to stay
In our day

And we are gathered here in freedom
We are gathered here in might
To show our children the solutions
That come from peace and why it's right, Oh
May peace prevail on Earth tonight
In our lives

And the distant mountains beckon
And the skies will heed our cry
And space awaits the joy of mankind
As we ask the reasons why, Oh
Yet peace in not so high
It lies inside

Of every being there is vision
Each man and woman has a voice
If we can work together in harmony
We bring peace out from it's source, Oh
May the ship of peace be on her course
Toward all shores

For war is not the answer
It is not the strongest force
It's love that binds us all together
And guides the shape of history's course, Oh
Let all of us rejoice
And raise our voice

May peace prevail on Earth
May peace be in our homes and countries
In these troubled times we live in
We will see the dark come light, Oh
May peace prevail on Earth tonight
In our lives

32. It hasta be by an Amurkin artist
otherwise I'd vote for "Damaged Goods" by Gang of Four:

"Damaged goods
Send them back
I can`t work
I can`t achieve
Send me back
Open the till
Give me the change
You said would do me good
Refund the cost
You said you`re cheap but you`re too much..."

(edit to this multiply repeated , shouty end bit:)

I`m kissing you goodbye
(Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)
(Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)
(Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)
(Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)
Bye...
(Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye)

etc

Loud, attention-grabbing guitar, lyrical pointedness and simplicity ,anthemic

Would pair nicely with a crisp, full bodied picture of aWol.
Like maybe the cherished nose-pick pic!

by Thunderclap Newman.

You all have heard it, even if you don't recognize the title/artist.

It's the last song on the "Almost Famous" soundtrack and it's the song the guys from Stillwater are singing acousitcally in the hotel room in LA.

Artist: Thunderclap Newman Lyrics
Song: Something in the Air Lyrics

Call out the instigators
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right

We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now

Lock up the streets and houses
Because there's something in the air
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right

We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together now

Hand out the arms and ammo
We're going to blast our way through here
We've got to get together sooner or later
Because the revolution's here, and you know it's right
And you know that it's right

We have got to get it together
We have got to get it together
Now

38. Bad Religion: Sorrow
Father can you jear me?
How have I let you down?
I curse the day that I was born
and all the sorrow in this world

Let me take you to the herding ground
where all good men are trampled down
Just to settle a bet that could not be won
between a brightful father and his son

Will you guide me now for I can't see a reason
for the suffering and this long misery
What if every living soul could be upright and strong?
Well then I do imagine

There will be (sorrow)
Yeah there will be (sorrow)
And there will be sorrow no more

When all soldiers lay their weapons down
or when all kings and all queens relinquish their crowns
Or when the only true messiah rescues us
from ourselves it's easy to imagine

There will be (sorrow)
Yeah there will be (sorrow)
And there will be sorrow no more

There will be (sorrow)
Yeah there will be (sorrow)
And there will be sorrow no more

Yeah there will be (sorrow)
Yeah there will be (sorrow)
And there will be sorrow no more

I find this song inspiring to the point of tears.
