Poll question: What should we name the baby?
Edited on Mon Dec-15-03 09:49 PM by NicoleM
All of these go with our last name. Middle name will be Robert or David.

Editing to add that while you are welcome to make suggestions, we won't be taking them. :) One of these will be the name we choose.

1. I picked the one I used 26 years ago.
Which, for my son's sake, will remain anonymous! ;-)

2. Owen is nice and unusual. Eli is real popular
and I like Owen. Very nice, unique, yet recognizable name.... pleasing to the ear.

3. Names
I'm not particularly fond of any of your preferred first names with those middle names. I don't think the first names are strong enough. It is important that the first name be a strong one, because he will be called by this name the rest of his life, even if he prefers not to be, i.e., graduations, government, etc.

Have you tried the reverse? I sorta like David Eli. Of course if you have a great maiden name, that could be a strong first name, for instance, Foster, Stoddard, etc.

Try thinking out of the box.

6. One of the names on the poll
will be our kid's first name. We've given it plenty of thought. And I have a really, really crappy maiden name that I would never inflict on a child.

9. If we pick Owen
it will be Owen Robert, because I don't want his initials to be O.D. I'm a little superstitious about these things.

7. Owen seems to flow with the middle name choices, although
Griffin seems to match those names also.

12. I went Soren by the way
I kinda like it. I think it'd be cool if your kid is the only one in his kindergarten class with it.

But, hey, Owen's good too. And that middle name's ok. Cool that you went for the more unique first name and common middle name. I have some friends who went the other way around, the kid's name was Oddyseus.

Say, now there's an idea... :)

13. We're kind of Scandinavian
so that's how Soren made the list. Robert is my FIL and David was my favorite uncle, that's where the middle names came from.

16. Go with Soren
You ARE in Minnesota, after all.

I've known kids named Einar, Bjorn, Reidun (that's a girl's name, by the way), Helga, and Dagny!

21. I knew an Einar, growing up, Do you know what a school teacher can DO
to that name?

It's BRUTAL, bloody and nothing short of slaugher during roll call and public announcements.

Be far kinder than that.

30. Interesting that you chose two Welsh names
both of which I quite like - Owain (Owen, Ioan), and Gryffydd (Griffith, Griffin). One of the last kings of independent Wales was Owain Gryffydd.

14. I'm voting for Owen.
I think the others are a little too odd. Remember, the kid has to live with this name for who knows how many years. The last thing you want is his being made fun of.

Of course, perhaps I shouldn't speak, having named my second son Jonah. He used to hate it, but seems to have gotten used to it.

18. do not give the child a name whose diminuation can be ridiculed
if your last name is hertz, someday, you will killed in your sleep by your 12 year old son, richard.

make sure the number of syllables in the full name (first and family name that is) produces a cadence that rolls off the lips.

if you expect him to use his middle name, forget it, do not expect the child to use a middle name as he grows older just becuase YOU want him to.

if your last name has 4 syllables, do not use a first name with one syllable. it sounds stilted. use 2 or 3 syllables for the first name.

if you have a last name with only one syllable, use a first name with 2 or 3 syllables, not one (its boring).

examples.

1. frank mciverson does not sound as nice as franklin mciverson.

2. john jones does not sound as nice as jonathon jones.

3. under no circumstances name your son adolf.

really nice-sounding! You have a very interesting choice of names, I don't think I've ever seen the name Soren except for Soren Kierkegaard, who basically started existentialism.

Yes. ALL of them.

:)

But seriously, what's wrong with a normal name? Owen or Eli is fine, but Griffin or Soren?

Name him whatever you like.

Ooh and if you're going Scandinavian, call him "Balder". Watch out for the mistletoe, though.

35. I don't like Owen, but it sounds like I'm in the minority!
I'll tell you why: Throw Momma From the Train. Whenever I hear the name Owen, I just hear that old Momma whining it.

I really like Eli; if we'd had a boy, we would have named him Elijah David and called him Eli (well, my husband may have disagreed, but I would have called him that!) Soren is cool as well.
