I have 8 quarts of chili cooking on the stove....Who wants some??
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 01:11 PM by SoCalDem
Our annual holiday pot luck supper is tonight, and I have resorted to making chili this year... The thought of transporting it 10 miles, without any spilling, is daunting, but I decided I could not go with my "usual"...and chili , it is..

I usually make 3 or 4 tri-tips cooked on the grill and sliced ever-so thinly,.. It's always the hit of the dinner, but at $4.89 per pound this year, it's a no-go..

I started the chili at 7 am, and already the house smells YUMMY :)

9. My chili is boring..
I don't even measure stuff.. I just keep adding things until it "looks & tastes" right..

ground beef
diced tomatoes
crushed tomatoes
tomato sauce
chopped onions
bay leaves
chili powder

and I know it irritates the "purists" , but we like kidney beans in our chili....So THERE :P

14. Nothing wrong with
beans in the chili....
I like the redskins myself,
if you cook long enough they explode anyway, and just add thickness...

ahhhhhhh,
you left out "hot stuff"...

and on a personal note, I hate having chunks of tomato in my chili.

6. I just ate
A huge deli sandwitch on fresh Jewish rye. I feel like Mr. Creosote right about now. But save some for dinner and I'm all over it like Oprah on a baked ham!

8. That suits me just fine
Do you make yours with black beans or kidney beans or no beans at all?

Just like to think about what I'm eating.

10. So what do y'all do to make your chili more interesting?
Don't divulge any secrets for which you'd have to kill me, but...

I've been trying to learn to cook for the past couple months. I feel like I'm ready to move beyond the cookie-cutter Betty Crocker recipes. I made the chili recipe in one of those cookbooks on Sunday. It was your basic chili, but I'm wondering what I can do to spice it up a little.

Any hints?

13. Forgot to add. I am also making apple squares & corn bread
But I won't do them until this afternoon.. I want them to still be warm..

I had not planned to make the apple squares, but one of my friends begged and pleaded, so I said yes .. They ARE the best.. I could make some money by selling them.. I have never had anyone not ask for the recipe when they tasted one :)
