Lounge women: Are you a girly girl?
I'll admit it---I am. I love makeup and skincare and fragrances and spa visits and pampering of all kinds. :) However, I am not a spoiled brat. :) I love clothes, but I don't buy them all the time, and I only buy clothes that I can get a lot of mileage out of. I want to look my best all the time (except for maybe when I'm sitting around at home).

As a person, I'm pretty low-maintenance. :) As a woman, I guess you'd call me medium-maintenance. I'm not fussy, but I enjoy my indulgences. I like shopping, but when I shop, I know what I'm looking for, I get it, and I leave---none of this hanging out at the mall or window-shopping business!

OK, I'm a girly girl. What about you? :hi:

Oh, and guys, you can chime in here whenever you like. I am going to assume for our purposes that you are NOT a girly girl, but please correct me if I'm wrong. :hi:

12. Yes. Looooove makeup, skincare, etc... but I only
go for products that are listed as "cruelty free" - no testing on animals. Once we're over that hurdle, I'll give almost any product a try. Love eyeliners, bright colors, lipstick, etc. Love it.

And looove clothes, but I'm a minimalist of sorts - I don't go for trendy stuff, only lasting designs. I guess I have a lot of jeans and tshirts/sweaters, but fewer "nice" items - qualility trousers, dresses, etc. - b/c I want them to last. And if I need something, I'll go to two, maybe three stores, maximum (or buy it on the Internet) b/c I don't like to 'drag' the mall. Boring.

I just like design and colors. This also goes to home design, gardening, jewelry, etc.

75. the list used to be pretty long, but now there is a
stricter definition of "cruelty free". An entire list of products, both with the easier standard and the stricter standard, can be found here:

http://www.idausa.org/facts/crueltyfree.html

Old, less-strict list, I used to buy, without guilt, Almay (drug store prices) or Estee Lauder products (includes Clinique and Origins) as well as M.A.C. and Ecco Bella.

But now, none of the above have agreed to the stricter standards, so I guess I'll probably go with the following (and try others on the list, too). I can vouch for these as being companies with great-smelling, extremely well-made products:. L'Occitane (everything they have smells wonderful); Kiss My Face; Terra Natura (their Terra Tint in Blaze is shaped like a chapstick but one of my favorite colors); The Body Shop; Urban Decay (fun makeup colors); and Yardley products. Not a lot of makeup in that lineup, so perhaps I'll still buy Almay and Estee Lauder lipsticks and eye colors... And I love M.A.C.

44. You sound a lot like me...
I have become well aware of the cruelty-free issue and definitely agree with it. :)

I'm definitely a minimalist when it comes to clothing and design too... And my makeup is tasetful and not Tammy Faye-ish. :) I do love funky jewelry, but I mainly wear earrings---necklaces and bracelets only rarely.

I really learned what colors look best on me when I finally learned what "season" my coloring is. I'm an Autumn, which means corals, rust reds, and warm earth tones look best on me. There are some vibrant rust-red lipsticks that I adore! :)

13. I'm full of contradictions...
I love shopping and have a billion assorted hair/skin products. Yes, I have short hair, but I still spend like 20 minutes in front of the mirror (even when it's pretty much buzzed). Pedicures are one of the best things ever invented. Other than that, I'm pretty low-maintence.

Normally, I'm in jeans/shorts & t-shirt/tank top. However, I can also pull off the cocktail dress and stilettos. In drag, I apparently also make a hot boy.

I'll squeal and demand somebody kill a spider for me, but I regularly handle other bugs (I think I'm subconsciously okay with it, because I'm feeding them to the lizards).

I don't like to cook or clean, but if it involves power tools, I'm totally into it (and for once I'm not being naughty by saying that).

I also read both Cosmo and Maxim.

Overall, I guess I balance my girly moments with my butch moments.

16. I go through ultra girly phases
Good skin care is the one constant but all the other stuff phases in and out about every 2 or 3 months. In TX I don't do much girly stuff in the summer except manis and pedis because it's just too damn hot. Make up melts in this weather, sweat replaces hair spray but it doesn't matter because the only hairstyle is a ponytail to keep the hair off my neck. Cute heels are replaced with flip flops and the standard uniform consists of tank tops and shorts. Once October rolls around, I'll be girly once more. :)

As far as shopping goes, I'm a bargain whore to the extreme. It's almost like a sport...think golf only more interesting. ;) I like to flip through a Vogue and find cheaper alternatives. Pretty dorky but fun when I can spare a few hours to do it.

20. mixed bag here
I think getting my hair, nails & pedicure every month is a necessity for my peace of mind. I don't like shopping for clothes and only go when I'm "on a mission" except for shoes..I LOVE shoes and I probably have too many but so what. I do like decorating & painting so going to the paint store or furniture stores is fine...even if I'm just browsing.
I love digging in the garden, getting muddy in the process and I love football and sports in general.

26. I guess I'd fall in the middle
of the spectrum. I don't need to be perfectly turned out, but I certainly couldn't put my hair in a ponytail, put on some lip gloss and go.

I do love getting decked out and dressed to the nines. Rarely have the chance to, though...

I don't like shopping, don't read Cosmo, and don't like shoes, though in my climate I need them. I love skin care, makeup and painting my toenails.

I haven't been able to use fragrance for a long time due to chemical sensitivities(though I can use some from the health food store now), and for the same reason, haven't been able to colour my hair. I would love to do the latter.

If I had more money, I think I would be more indulgent...however, I also like the fact that I've got out of the 'consumerist mentality' and buy only what I need. That, more than anything, has put me in touch with my 'feminine' side - sustaining the planet. :hi:

68. I used to be... before I had my child
after that I didn't have the time, and now, I choose to spend my time doing other things. The most time-consuming part of my morning ritual is my workout at the gym.

It takes me 2 minutes to apply my skin care and makeup on work days, and on weekends, I don't even bother.

I like shopping more than I used to now that I can shop in regular sizes, but I am still pretty frustrated that most of the clothes are designed for people who are a size 2 and 5'10" (the last thing in the world I need is a prairie skirt, or a skirt that has pleats that START at my hips--look everybody! Here they come, MissMillie's hips!)

I do have my nails done regularly, but I keep them relatively short and wear very plain polish.

I like my hair best when I dry it straight, but in the summer humidity, it's a losing battle that I refuse to fight. I do color my hair to cover the gray.

I can't be bothered with that stuff. Also, I do not equate nail polish, mascara, etc., with femininity. I equate it with consumerism and a marketing strategy that makes women feel inadequate so they will buy the advertiser's product.

If I have to look good, I'll put on some foundation and some lipstick. That's about it. Nails, high heels, sandals with too many straps, etc., are out of the question.

I wasn't always this way, though. When I was very young, I was a girly girl.

56. Only if they want to.
"Girly-girl" is an expression...but I don't refer to grown women as girls or grown men as boys. There are other expressions like "boys' night out", and that doesn't mean it's demeaning to men. I also would NEVER refer to an African-American man as "boy" or anything else derogatory...

I applaud you for being so conscious of terminology. :applause: I am as well. I also know that context can make all the difference. :)

63. Consider that the male equivalent to 'girly girl' is
'manly man,' not boyish boy or something similar. There are very few usages where adult men can be called boys and have it mean something positive.

65. I'm a boy
:D

See? *pantsdrop*

I remember when, at the age of 20, a woman told her little girl (in a grocery store) something like "let the man through, please"...totally freaked me out, because I just had never yet thought of myself as a 'man.' My fatehr was a man, and I was still a boy...a kid. Major paradigm shift moment.

I still feel that way, to an extent. Some of it may well be partly a result of (or, at least, nurtured by) spending so long in academia where, for all its downside, a kind of Peter Pan Syndrome is commonplace. In another thread here I opined that perhaps some of us seem more youthful than our contemporaries because, in part, we're doing things we truly enjoy. I definitely think that -- in combination with the climate encouraged by academic institutions and continual interaction with a neverending procession of younger people -- is why so many of the professors I know seem perpetually youthful and, very often (even with gray or no hair) often look as much, too.

74. Please pull your pants up.
:spray: That's not a sentence that I ever imagined that I would type.

You may feel like a boy or a girl as an adult, but I was commenting on the gender disparity in the language used to describe someone. It's not an observation about feeling youthful as an adult. I tend to agree that if you're happy with who you are and what you're doing, and you aren't engaging in practices that are known to whomp a good one on your face (like too much tanning or smoking) that people will read you as younger than you are. Faces eventually reveal stress.

Back to language differences: my comment was an observation on usage. I find it interesting we describe women's acceptance of gender patterned behavior 'girly girl', not womanly woman which would parallel the construction for the male equivalent.

At this point you've probably pulled your pants downed again to moon me, you silly boy.

79. I know...frightens the horses...

Yep, I agree totally...there's a lot of hidden gender-based diminution/paternalism/etc in much of our colloquial language, and most of it we (the vast majority of us) probably don't even notice until we sit down to think about it. On the other hand, the syllabic bulk of "womanly woman" is a tad more unwieldy than "girly girl" (the alliteration helps things flow a bit better, too, the saying of "womanly woman" pretty much making anyone sound like Julia Child) just as "manly man" is a little more natural than "boy-y boy." Not that this is something I ponder, not least because I never use (present evidence notwithstanding) either term. :-)

On the yes side: I consider myself feminine. I like to look good. I like to smell good too......I like to flirt with guys......

OTOH: I'm distinctly not into makeup. Lipstick only, for me. I am fussy about the shade, though......Shopping wears me out. I mostly buy my clothes in catalogs.

But I do consider myself to be feminine.......

So, I think I'm a mixed bag.....but my husband thinks I'm sexy!

My uniform of choice for work is a pair of khakis and a polo type shirt..

After work..a pair of shorts and a tie dye shirt or other t shirt.

I have never worn makeup..unless you count the time some co-workers let me talk them into applying eye makeup on me. I didn't like it, my eyelids felt heavy.

I do like shopping but prefer Best Buy and Circuit City.

I wish someone would call the people on "What not to wear" and have them come and take me away, lol.

...I know. lol.

I don't wear make-up, well... the only exception being concealer which I use to hide any blemishes when I go out in the evenings. God forbid I should walk into a club with my face looking like shit. I also own probably close to 15 different skin care products, most of which are for my hands and face. Let's see. I have about 8 different products for my hair, including gels, mousse, pomade, sprays, straightening solutions, etc., plus a range of products for shaving and tanning. And lets not talk about clothes, cause my closets are just packed full, haha. I usually get a manicure and pedicure every other week or so, and a massage whenever my schedule allows it. I'm also a bit obsessed with colognes, owning close to 20 different fragrances.

I guess it's fair to say that I take pride in my appearance and am not ashamed to primp. For instance, last night when I was getting ready to go out to the club with my boyfriend, it took me close to 90 minutes to get ready.

78. Mani and pedi at all times, if only a home job-check.
Frilly, lacy bras and panties that must match my outer clothing at all times-check.

Lots of frangrancy lotions-check.

(Sorry, only one perfume. I stick w/ one for a signature.)

An unnatural fascination w/ all makeup counters-check.

Real stockings and garters-check.

A love of wearing dresses-check.

A love of shoes and purses and a need to constantly buy accesories-check.

I'm a girly girl who cannot dress as I'd like at work. If I had my way my closet would be filled with clothing from the 40's and 50's, with some modern accesories to update the look. I own 5 hairdryers, numerous curling irons in different sizes, flat irons, hot rollers and tons of product.

The good thing is that I'm not obnoxious about it. Though I prefer to dress and look girly I'm just as likely to sit down at a poker table filled with men and play a game. I'm not afraid to be mussed up a bit-hair and makeup can always be repaired later. I enjoy participating in sports and I love, love, LOVE camping. Eventually I'd like to take classes in auto repair and building trades, just to know that I can do it w/o relying on someone else.

I think I'm an even combination of both girly girl and tomboy.

I guess I'll never get over it. She was always my guilty pleasure.
My friends were more of the metalhead variety back then.
I still listen to Kim today though, her voice never gets old.

But I still have a burning question, what does she mean by New York to East California?
East California is the Mojave Desert. Why not the coast? I lived in Calif for alot of years and I've never heard the phrase. Since it came from Kim, I'll let it slide.

113. More of a fashionista
I really like nice clothes, especially totally impractical things that I cannot possibly wear to work and high heels that I can only wear if I'm not walking very far. But not girly girl stuff, but more severe looking clothes, lots of black and pencil skirts and leather pants, etc.

Otherwise, I like to look well put together, elegant and classic. I like to have manicured nails and a good haircut. I don't like to shop, I like to buy. Find what I want, try it on, have it fit, buy it.

But I don't like to spend a lot of time primping, especially not on a daily basis. I have my work-day make up down to about 10 minutes. I will spend some time doing my make up for a fancy night out. But on a regular basis it's a bore. I like to get my nails and hair done at a salon, but I only go every 4 or 5 months. I can't wear perfume to work, so it's only a night out thing.

I DO like a nice spa facial and pedicure, but I usually only get those when I'm on vacation somewhere.

And a fashionista? I'll have to seek your counsel when I have a fashion issue! :hi:

128. I'm as butch as they come...
but I think that's mostly because I had *no* help in the girly girl department from anybody in my family. My mother has never worn make-up and wears sweatsuit combos everywhere.

Now I'd kind of like to start wearing discreet make-up and dressing a little better but I have no idea where to start. I spent something like 5 hours reading fashion magazines and now I'm even more confused.

Does anyone out there have any recommendations about how to learn about this stuff without spending billions of dollars on products I don't actually need? And I can't watch TV (I used to watch "What not to wear" but they don't teach you much about hair and make-up.)

Thanks!

Sometimes yes:

- make up
- hair stuff
- freshly done nails
- quality lingerie
- perfume
- jewelry
- heels
- little black dress
- attitude
- and, uh... big red plastic kissy lips

Sometimes no:

- no makeup
- hat head from baseball cap
- t-shirt, jeans and deck shoes
- sleeping in a most UNladylike position in public

And makeup. I could spend hours in Sephora.

Nope. That's been done, too.

But, trust me, after I massage the opening line a little bit so that it more befits you, I could go on for quite a while... :D

204. Same here, except for Figure Skater.
:hi: My sister, the tomboy, loved to cut my dolls' hair and generally ruin them. I loved to fix Barbie's hair (and Francie's, and Malibu Barbie's, and...) and get new outfits for her. I also had Dawn dolls, and I was a late 60s/early 70s doll fashion diva. :P Oh, and this is an early indicator of my later obsession with makeup/skincare/fashion/etc.---from Christmas 1969! Santa brought me a vanity set complete with play makeup. That's a big deal for a 6-year-old girly girl!

215. great photo...we're close in age, and I had a very similar make-up
table too, lol...loved all my dolls...mom would make me barbie clothes too,
great barbie clothes! she could have sold them and made a fortune. When I think
of my childhood, I think of how lucky I was; safe, loved, and had pretty much
any of the toys I wanted at the time..sort of like your peaceful picture of yesterday.
:), thanks for the photo..it brought me back.

:hi: I had a similar childhood and consider myself extremely lucky as well. And that's one of my favorite childhood photos... I got Malibu Barbie then too (although you can't see it in the picture). :D

Nice to know we've got so much in common! Glad the pic could take you back...

184. Not so much - more of a tom boy
I don't usually do my nails (tho' now I try to at least paint my toenails so they look nice in my sandals. I do wear makeup and enjoy experimenting with it.

I enjoy getting my hair colored and cut, but I'm not vigilant about it. :P

If it weren't for work, I'd be in shorts and Tees all day, every day. I seldom wear dresses. On the weekends, I don't wear makeup, nor shoes for that matter.

Having said that, I enjoy crying at movies, and crying for no reason really, just emotional release.

I'm very sensual: I love all my senses and enjoy having experiences just to see how they feel or look or sound or smell.

191. I Would Classify Myself
as a middle of the road girly girl. I love to paint my nails and buy the wonderful smelling lotions. My hair gets colored (the grey is getting to me) on occasion and I am a perfume snob. I will admit it. I love Estee Lauder. Outside of that its flip flops and jeans. I look like an regular joe I guess. But I smell pretty darn good. I can look nice when we go out at times. But I don't have much of a "wardrobe" per say. I am a SAHM. Its comfort above all else.

193. I LOVE cosmetics of all kinds; have 25 + pairs of shoes (although
I usually wear the same pair of Rocket Dog thongs every day, lol). I also have a SERIOUS designer handbag fetish (everything from Dooney & Bourke to Marc Jacobs). Like you, I usually only buy clothes that are going to last awhile; spend a lot for a classic piece..I'll go trendy only if the item is pretty cheap.
However, I'm a sports fanatic, especially football, and I love to fish.
I also curse like a sailor, and can drink any man I know under any table (a skill of which I am particularly proud).
So I don't know.. I guess I'm a girly-girl with latent manly tendencies?

Hmmmm.... that would describe me to a certain extent too. I know home repair, lawn maintenance and landscaping/gardening, and I have a Master's degree in cursing (got that from my mom, lol!) and driving. :P

I'll have to remember that! :hi:

195. I used to be....
{{{{sigh}}}}}

But since my looks took a header with the MS, I'm much less concerned about clothes and manicures and such. I don't read glamour magazines at all anymore.

I still love perfume, and I do wear makeup for work, but I hate ruffles on anything and I curse like a sailor. I have pretty undies, but almost never wear them. Like the comfy stuff better.

HOWEVER, I scrapbook, love to cook, love gardening (when it's not disgusting like it is now), and love decorating magazines. Especially shabby chic.

I know...study in contrasts.

I'd go out of my mind if I were a 'girly girl.'

I can dress up and put on make-up when need be, but I'd much rather be wearing jeans and a t-shirt and riding a motorcycle in the dirt. LOL.

I don't bother doing my nails, though. If I could afford spa treatments, I would. I do buy the Aveda products for my skin and hair, and am saving my points to get a whole day at the spa-massage, body wrap, facial, haircut, and the whole works.
