Connecticut's Republican governor done got himself in hot water!
Edited on Tue Dec-16-03 08:31 PM by NightTrain
Seems that my state's three-term GOP governor, John Rowland, has been caught in a lie. He recently denied that he got work done to his summer cottage in exchange for handing out lucrative state contracts to friends and colleagues that he got to pay for that work.

But in true Republican fashion, it turns out that Rowland was lying through his teeth! And this is merely the latest example of corruption in the Rowland administration. Now the people of Connecticut are finally pissed off, to a point at which even some of Rowland's fellow Republicans are calling for his resignation.

What follows are some excerpts from today Letters to the Editor column of the Hartford Courant:

1. Having voted twice for Mr. Rowland, I feel he has betrayed my trust and used his office for personal gain. The governor needs to step down or be removed from office to restore dignity to Connecticut's government.

2. Governor Rowland has been an inspiration to summer home owners everywhere. If that cottage, cabin or beach house can use a new roof or a hot tub, simply ask your friends and colleagues to pay for it. And don't forget to remind them to expect nothing in return. What's friendship for, expecially if you're a Republican?

3. I have been a taxpayer in Connecticut for more than 50 years, and the administration of Governor John G. Rowland is the most corrupt administration of all. Our legislators should consider implementing a recall law so that the citizens of Connecticut could have a say in the event we are unfortunate enough to elect another dishonest governor such as the one we are stuck with now.

4. Besides death and taxes, the only other things one can absolutely rely on are the incompetence, arrogance and dishonesty of politicians. Governor Rowland could be a poster child for all these traits.

5. How can anyone believe anything John Rowland says without wondering how truthful it is? Credibility is the basis of public service. Without it, an elected official cannot govern. He should resign in the best interest of the state of Connecticut.

6. Aha! At last I see that instead of negotiating in good faith with the governor of this fine state according to the rule of law, union representatives should have offered to install a linoleum floor in Mr. Rowland's cottage. So let me ask the elected officials in Connecticut this question: Whose kitchen cabinets do we need to install to provide the taxpayers of this state ethical accountability?

Those excerpts were from less than half the letters in today's Courant slamming Rowland. Suffice it to say, I loved every word of it!

5. I think the last guy came close,
but this was the second time he tried and failed to take him out, so I don't think he will be getting much of a chance for a third... Besides, he was just reelected in 2002, so it's still another 3 years until the next election.

8. Why not? He ran for the Senate and the Vice-Presidency at the same time!

I guess Holy Joe figures, if you run for enough offices simultaneously, you're bound to get elected to one of 'em!

6. This story had ties to Bush
Rowland was set to go to Washington in the fashion of Tom Ridge. You know, the way Bush brings his old buddies in near him. Kenny Boy lay and our Governor Rowland were good buddies. This story is soooooo much deeper than this Tomasso scandal. He's been giving Tomasso no-bid contracts for years. But he also gave Enron $220,000,000 out of the state coffers before Kenny took the place down, and the state lost every penny. It was ostensibly for energy futures. But the following week, Lay gave Rowland a huge fat check for his reelection party. Pure coincidence, of course.

Then there's the Cross Sound Electric Cable, unburied in places, leaking chemicals into oyster beds, laying exposed in shipping lanes...Rowland got it turned on by overriding a moratorium against use of the cable, issued by the CT AG. The reason? The big blackout somehow proved how vulnerable Long Island was, and we needed to have the extra capacity online. For some homeland security reason. It quietly made its way into Bush's so-far failed energy bill, requiring an act of Congress -- literally -- to turn the cable off again.

It goes on and on and on...but the CT Republicans are just like the national ones...there is a story on the front page of the Courant, too, about the state GOP circling the wagons in support of Rowland. They want to wait to see the results of an investigation. What will an investigation do? Rowland ADMITTED to outright lying...no obfuscations, no questions...he said one thing last week, he admitted this week that he was lying. But the Republicans still are blasting the Courant for ganging up on Rowland, who, they say, is a fine man of integrity, blah blah blah.

This fish has been rotting from the head for quite some time. I'd bet the Bushista regime tried to vet Rowland and found out the FBI was sniffing around. His supposed cabinet post never materialized.
