When was the last time you got off your ASS to help Democrats win?

Sometimes here on DU I feel that I am in the company of "Summer Soldiers and sunshine patriots".

I see a lot of talk, and a lot of useless prattle about all manner of things, but I see VERY few people who claim to have done a darned thing in any practical sense to help Democrats win in '06, in '08, or EVER.

I quit my 110,000 a year job to run White Rose full time for about 30,000 a year because it was needed, and because I thought it would help the cause of Democratic victory.

I am a Precinct committeeman.

I walk precincts for candidates in a heavily Republican town where I get a lot of hostility.

I phone bank.

I collect signatures on nominating petitions.

I go to democratic organization meetings.

I go to flea markets and set up booths with informational fliers.

And do you know how I spent this 95 degree summer's day? PAINTING a campaign office for the Elgin Democrats.

Unless you are willing to put your ass on the line in a practical sense, you can forget about being "Underground". You can even forget about being "Democratic". We don't need your one vote. We need the hundred votes you could deliver if you got off your duff and tried to make a difference.

Nothing whatsoever you do here on a message board, be it "DUing a poll", signing a useless online petition, or even moderating this place will ever do as much good for the Democratic Cause as a single day spent going door-to-door for your local Democratic Organization.

1. I served as a delegate to the Senate District convention
this year. I was involved in GOTV efforts in both 2000 and 2004 before and on Election Day.

I donate money, and time to Democrats, and will continue to in my new home.

3. I have been active in our local
democrat club since february of this year. My wife and I decided to add our own chips to the table of politics. We campaign, we do the rounds(door to door), and currently we are trying to elect John Felders, to the 131st District, here in sw missouri, his opponent is a Roy Blunt bagman named Kevin Wilson.

This county is so damn red, its ridiculous. My wife and I try our best, and thats all we can hope to do. My wife has done a lot more in her career to promote American Indian causes, primarily a Democrat lead issue, but there are a few repubs who are decent saber rattlers for American Indian causes.

50. To be quite honest
DU pushed me into becoming more politically active. After the loss in 04, I was in a rut, and I started coming to DU(a coworker of my wife, recommended the site) and this site, in truth...gave me some of my energy back, and with that energy, and level of debate on this site at the time, pushed me to become more politically active.

I am usually not a "in your face" sort of person, so it took me a while, to feel comfortable enough to start going to Democrat Club meetings, but after my first one, I was won over. There is nothing like, seeing 70yr old plus people, cuss, and complain about Bush...most of our dem club members are "really" old. :)

The hardest part about our democrat club, is a few, well...connected people, who act out, when they feel like their toes are being stepped on(it happened quite a few times). My wife and I question a lot of their current intiatives and fund raising, and a few other things, and we got the impression from a few members, that we were being, well, outta bounds.

My first real head butt was with an older lady in the club, who was very, very, very upset that there was a yahoo dem group, for our county, and this same lady was very upset, that I would recommend other websites(aka DU and that yahoo group) other than there "prized" website of the firedupmissouri.com site(or something similiar). Its not really a problem, its just a minor road bump, outta 60 plus members, about three give us extreme grief, but that goes a long with the territory...

lemon. Then, we wrapped it all up in foil and put it on the grill. Oh yeah, and we dug some clams too. We ate some of those raw, so that was easy, but we also baked some. It was a very good dinner.

37. Ben, you get more bees with honey than you do with vinegar.
My husband is a precinct chairman in Washington County, Oregon.

He took over a booth at the Washington County fair on Sunday and was there for several hours.

On Tuesday, he is going to do telephoning at the Democratic HQ in Beaverton, OR at 3 PM, then will stay on to attend a training session until 8 PM. Furthermore, we have a long history of being active politically in Massachusetts, where we used to live.

I am doing my part by accessing lots of people around the country to speak about the upcoming election on my radio show.

People who may wish to become active should be offered a carrot, not hit with a stick. You're not usually so belligerent or challenging. What happened here?

In peace,

Radio_Lady

39. How much time have you got?
High school:
Youth editorial columnist for local paper in highly red town, banned from being in same venue as President Bush or VP Cheney.
Democratic precinct captain, 2004 election season.
Phone banking, 2004 election season.
Local Dems website maintenance, 2004 election season.
Election volunteer, 2004 election season, a job, which in this town involves a lot of driving to remote areas on the Navajo Reservation to obtain preliminary election results.

Oh, yeah I did all that shit before I could even vote for myself.

College:
Petition drives nearly every weekend.
Webmaster for my college Dems organization.
Event organizer for college Dems, organized citywide Dems conference, brought Dick Durbin to speak at our university.
Believe me, there's more I can't even remember doing at this point.

Most of us DUers are here for reason, that being we *support Dems* and *help them win*

There's a place for this type of self-congratulatory rambling: it's called GD. I suggest you use it.

38. I'm not American, so I do nothing to help the Democrats win elections.
I'm a member of the Young New Democrats at my university and I also support Oxfam, Amnesty International, local women's/gay rights groups, etc. whenever I get the chance. I'm progressively working towards eliminating sweatshop-made clothing from my wardrobe completely. I walk or skateboard just about everywhere I go and if I can't walk, I use public transportation if at all possible. I'm doing my part whether or not I'm helping a fucking political party win elections.

And I don't feel the need to condemn other people on message boards for wasting their time (nor do I follow members around and post fucking popcorn smilies whereever they happen to post) and put myself on a fucking pedestal.

Because you don't have to. You know what you do, or don't do, and you live with that. Or don't if you tragically die as I type this. Either way, fuck it. Even if half the stuff people on the internet claimed was true, that doesn't mean you owe them anything. They make their choices, you make yours, and fuck anyone who tries to shit their particular brand of morality down your throat.

I know what I do, and I don't need some random dude on the internet calling me on the carpet because he thinks he's the enlightened god of activism here to save me from my morass of inactivity. Fuck that.

55. Perhaps it would be better to offer people a hand up rather than a slap
Edited on Mon Jul-31-06 12:44 AM by LeftyMom
Post ideas about what they can do in a variety of enviornments and circumstances instead of a list of all the things you do. After all, the things you do are getting done and there is no point in duplicating your work, while there are many niches that are unfilled or even unimagined.

right spot? Sheesh. And don't give me any of that, "I'm not an American crap."

83. Projectile bile I guess.
I'm not into fellating any men (with the noted exception of Johnny Depp, who transcends sexuality), especially old men. And I'm not into people giving themselves fucking medals...so I guess that's the only option.

70. Okay...y'know what?
I might post in the lounge. I might enjoy playing. But to assume that because I'm not posting some hoity-toity curriculum vitae...some fancy-schmancy resume or list of accomplishments or organizations that I pay dues to...

Does NOT mean I sit back on my ass and do nothing to advance the candidate(s) of my choice. Every time I open my mouth and put my opinion out there at work...in my living room...in my car with my kids...I'm doing something.

Every essay that I write, every neighbor that I pass the time of day with and share my views and opinions....I'm doing something.

Every grocery store clerk or...yeah...you get the idea.

And, believe it or not, you'd be surprised at the number of people who are more receptive to my kind of approach.

I've raised a whole houseful of liberals...heh, and with the size of my family, that's no small accomplishment.

Now, if I could just do something with the freeper nest across the street...

But do NOT presume to say that your way is the only way. Or even the Best way.

Good!
In the benburch School of Political Activism, shame is a prime motivator.

Now, get out there and work those Freepers until they believe MIHOP and listen to Air America 24/7, or don't come back here again!

My freeper neighbors don't have any booze to drink. If it wasn't for their three kids, I'd think my freeper neighbors didn't...well...have any booze to drink.

You've got better freepers than I do.

helping the GOP.

Cause, you know, I'm wasting all my time forwarding the homosexual agenda, so that someday myself and other queer Americans will have equal rights.

and is thinking of organizing the greens. Thinks we (DEMS) are just as much of a problem. Well, not as evil as the GOP...

Being part of some Zell Miller Dem party is not such a great thing for progressives. I really don't know what to do about it.

And I may be the next local dem chair.

Get your foreign ass up here and save us from our neighbors' stupidity! It's your duty! :sarcasm:

Not that most of the people on this thread would know your PM if he walked up and thwaped them upside the head with a jar of vegemite. It's everybody's duty to care about and be involved in American politics no matter what but most of us neither know or care what the rest of the world is up to until the shooting starts, liberals sadly included.
