Anyone know what might happen if I delete some old Font files?
I just realized that one of the reasons my computer boots so slowly is that I have over 500 fonts in my Font folder, some of them dated back to 1992.

If I deleted the fonts that date back to before 2002, what would happen?

Does Windows re-download fonts it needs?

What's an average number of fonts? How many do you have in your Font folder?

1. Probably not a good idea to delete
I have 225 fonts on my computer. If you do delete fonts needed by windows, I believe that cause a problem. I wouldn't recommend it.

If you want to improve boot time, you could try getting rid of temporary files and defrag the hard drive. Also, check on how many programs are starting up when you start your computer. All of that will certainly slow down a boot up.

4. I've tried most of that, I have a lot of security software that loads...
...that slows down the boot a lot (Anti-Virus, Anti-spyware, anti-Ad, etc...), so I'm always looking for any small speed improvements.

2. Copy your fonts folder to another location and rename it

Then delete the fonts you don't want from Windows. If you ever want to use the deleted ones again just reinstall the ones you want. I probably have about 5k or more fonts, but I only have about 200 installed at any one time. If I need a specific font, I'll install it and use it, when I'm done I just remove it. Windows lets you know which are needed system fonts and won't let you remove them, the others you can remove.

6. The time/space continuum would collapse into another dimension,
we'd all die and you'd get the The Blue Screen of Death.

Love ya,

7. Very funny, sarge43. You're playing MSty for me on that fiddle!
However, the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH has been replaced by a black, grey, and white one that says YOU HAVE MADE AN ERROR. GO DIRECTLY TO JAIL. DO NOT PASS 'GO'. DO NOT COLLECT $100.

Oh, sorry...

wrong instructions...

:sarcasm:

8. I hear they'll going to replace that with one that says
BEFORE YOU PRESS THE ENTER BUTTON, YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF "DO YOU FEEL LUCKY? WELL, DO YOU PUNK?"

9. Actually, if you delete font files from the Windows folder
all that will happen is you speed up the load time for Windows bexause it no longer has to load all those unused font files. If at a later date you wish to replace them, you can do a goolge search for them or a better idea is to copy them to a CD for archival storage.

hehehe -225 fonts, I bet you set a land speed record for load times.
