Alaska DUers, I have some questions...
I have an uncle who lives up there in the Fairbanks area, but he wasn't able to answer some things for me. The main thing he wasn't able to answer was about the job market there. How is it? I work as a carpenter, but I have a useless 4-year degree in Gen. Studies.

The reason I'm thinking of moving there is because I'm tired of deadly heat waves, and for health reasons. It's harder and harder for me to work outdoors (which I love) in this weather. I've gotten sick and vomited many times this summer working outside.

I know the winters are extreme there, but I like that, skiing, both CC and downhill are hobbies of mine.

So if someone could give me some insight to the job market so I can research, that would be great.

1. Post this on the Alaska state board - it will stick around longer
Even though the individual boards get less traffic, the posts don't sink as quickly. Good luck - my SO would give his right arm to move to Alaska - he can't handle the heat - but there's not a lot of work for actors up there.

depending on gas pipeline politics...lots of work for a carpenter...your best bet for work would be in anchorage...but what kind of work are you looking for?
do you mean to say you don't wanna work outside? that would limit any work you may get as a carpenter...

for some very good info on alaska job go to this link....i command you!

5. No, I don't mind working outside.
I just don't want to work outside in triple-digit heat everyday. I love working outside in the cold, however.

7. Winters ARE extreme in Fairbanks
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 01:18 PM by Blue_In_AK
but if you're not afraid of that, I think you would really love the area. We spent about eight days camping up around there this summer and had a great time. And if the winters get to be too much for you, you could always move to Anchorage, which is much more moderate temperature-wise. I can't speak to Fairbanks's job market, but I think the state is doing pretty well economically right now.

8. Extreme winters are no big deal to me.
I'd even live in Barrow, but there's not much there from what I hear.
