Vatican threatens Madonna with excommunication
Rome's Catholic, Muslim and Jewish leaders have united to condemn pop star Madonna's decision to stage a mock-crucifixion when she performs in the Italian capital on Sunday a stone's throw away from Vatican City.

The lapsed-Catholic diva's latest irreverent performance sees her wearing a fake crown of thorns and descending on a suspended, glittery cross as part of her worldwide "Confessions Tour".

Having already been criticised in the United States, Catholics priests from across the Eternal City have gone one further saying the act is blasphemy.

Cardinal Ersilio Tonino, speaking with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI said: "This time the limits have really been pushed too far.

1. is she even still Catholic?
I think she worships at the shrine of self-involvement, primarily. So I suspect any excommunication will have little effect. ;)

2. That's impressive that Madonna is able to get such attention
The more usual thing to do now is to say "so-and-so has excommunicated himself by his actions" For example, those women who held an ordination recently were not excommunicated specifically, but were told that their actions have broken their communion with the church. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06213/710168-85.stm Joining the freemasons is the same kind of thing. But for madonna to actually get such personal attention really shows her great status.

3. Diamanda did this, what, 15 years ago? And she was nekkid...
Madonna steals all the good shit performance artists do and feeds it to the public with a pop rock soundtrack, and makes millions to boot. So unfair.

But I like the fact the Catholic Church is still willing to give her free publicity for her albums and tours. I wonder if they get a percentage.

4. Hmmm.... so what makes it blasphemy?
The fact that she's doing it at a music show and not a religious venue? If she passes a plate, will that make it okay? Does that mean the scene in ol' Mel's movie was blasphemy? Or the religious fanatics who drag crosses about on holy days - are they committing blasphemy or is that stuff exempt? What makes something exempt?

I get so confused sometimes....

9. Hell they excommunicated my grandmother for her husband
leaving her without her or her children knowing it. Pretty awesome that Vatican.

Actually they are. I thank them for my father's Buddhism and my Atheism.

10. Isn't this ironic?
Madonna has taken things too far? And Bush is responsible for how many deaths? The Israelis have killed how may Lebanese? Hezbollah has killed how many people?

I can see where the religious leaders could get their cassocks in a bind. Riding a glittering crucifix is so much worse than starting a war. Glad they have their priorities straight. :sarcasm:
