Attacks on Mel and other celebrities
Edited on Thu Aug-03-06 05:30 PM by TMA1
I have seen those of the far right viciously attack celebrities for not supporting family values, and this has always bothered me. It is their life and their personal business, who cares what they do?

Now when I saw Mel being attacked for his anti-semitism, I felt the same way as most people did, I felt disgusted by it. I am no anti-semite, and I hate anti-semitism very much. Do I feel Mel has to apologize for it though? no! He is obviously anti-semitic, but he should have every right to be one damn it! Why should he apologize for anything that he says? and why should people attack him so much? You know why? he is a symbol for right wing christianity, and like any vindictive kid, many of you would like to see him fall.

I dont particularly like his films, I think they have some merit, but are generally terribly made in my personal opinion. I could care less about his personal life, but I do hate it when people use these cases as assaults for some political gain, seems a bit of a sham to me.

I have seen many people throw around "groupthink", the trite and overused orwellian term for those who think inside the box. It is funny though that this can be found everywhere, even blogging sites, that act on the same groupthink mentality!

1. If Mel has a "right" to be an anti-semite don't we a have a "right"....
......to point it out, or as you say - "attack" him? I haven't seen anyone here propose to take away his "right" to be an anti-semite and/or throw him in jail. Have you? Of course, he IS subject to jail for his drunk driving - not his anti-semitism.

Speaking of his law-breaking....We ARE in agreement that he is a symbol of right-wing christianity:

Pious
Hypocritical
Drunk
Anti-semite

I wouldn't be surprised if he turned out to be a pedophile.

2. I think what you're seeing is a bit of "I told you so"
When gibson released his jesus snuff movie a couple years ago, a lot of people pointed out how anti Semitic parts of the film were. The Catholic church and the fundamentalist christians would hear none of that and defended gibson as a sincere christian without a bigoted bone in his body. Well the truth has emerged and those who were scoffed at for their opinions are rightly pointing out what they said earlier. I don't give a shit if gibson is anti semitic. I don't care if he builds a little concentration camp in his yard and parades around it wearing shiny black boots and a monocle. But I also believe his critics have the same rights as he with regard to the expression of their opinions.

3. Why does he need to apologize?
Because he likes the way he makes a living maybe?

Because he'd like to keep making movies?

(Mel Gibson isn't a symbol of "rightwing Christianity" to me. He's always been--and will always be--Mad Max.)

5. hmm
I was more attacking those in the mainstream press that demands apologies from him. I feel that any apology would be completly phony. I hate how people defend him as being too trashed to actually mean what he said. He obviously did mean what he said, and was totally wrong for it. I just hate how phony these kinds of things get. And yes, some people do look up to him as a model christian, and why? I do not know.

4. Mel's a distraction and cable news loves a distraction.
Let him rot and let's move on.

7. He should apologize because being a bigot of any kind
is reprehensible. He needs to reread the Sermon on the Mount. Love thy brother as you love yourself.
