I can't stop listening to
Elvis' 1963 version of "What'd I Say," recorded for the Viva Las Vegas soundtrack.

The only problem is that my CD of that soundtrack is currently languishing in another state, along with my LPs that include it (not that I have a turntable here, anyway), and the MP3 I have of the song is on a disc I can't find. So I'm resorting to listening to my recording of it from earlier this year...over and over...and over...and over.

And I'm finding myself, with headphones on, lip-synching to my vocal.

There just seems something so wrong about that.

5. There we go
Thanks! :D

My DVD of Viva Las Vegas is also in California. I think it's maybe the best of the '60s travelogue movies (love the soundtrack, too), and certainly features the best cinematography and lighting -- they used a little more imagination and care in shooting it than was normal.

And Ann Margret....mmmmmmm..... :loveya:

9. The track (the original) has always bothered me
They cranked his voice up in the mix and the music is so low. There is some good jammin' on that tune too. I guess it's not as bad as when they made him sound like a gnome on "Girl Happy".

10. Elvis hated when they did that, too
He was steeped in the sensibility of gospel quartets, never really comfortable on a stage alone (he freaked out on New Years Eve in 1975, in the Silverdome, when he found that they'd designed a high platform for him that kept him away from the band and his backup singers), and he hated being so front-and-center. The movie soundtracks had some of the worst examples, because he had more control over the stuff he recorded in Nashville...wasn't "Double Trouble" particularly heinous?

Yeah, "Girl Happy" is freaky. :D

I mean, I grew up with it and loved the song, but it's a lot different and more natural sounding in its pre-Laughing-Gnome incarnation...what the hell were they thinking?

First nurse ever rocked my cradle
Made me jump for joy

:D
