Poll question: Am I the ONLY person on the planet that hasn't seen LOTR ? ANY of them?
My kid is addicted, every other post in the lounge is about it, the new one, the old ones... the actors, the posters, the music, the clothes, etc.

I read the entire series before age 12, and truly adored it, to the point I can't bear to see the movies. I have firmly planted in my mind's eye how each character, looks, acts, speaks and behaves. I don't want MY vision of the story tainted by someone else's version. PLUS I KNOW that the movies have left out soo sooooo sooooo many important details I would notice instantly, disrupting the flow of the story for me.

Anyone else?

1. I've actually never read the books, never saw the movies
but will probably do both eventually.

3. I drove directly from the first movie to the book store to
get the books... I loved it that much. Personally...while they have cut some things out... it isn't that bad. I haven't gone out to see the latest movie, but I'm very much looking forward to it.

4. Never read the books, never saw the movies
Hubby bought me the DVD for Christmas last year and the wrapping is still on it. Just doesn't really interest me. I may watch it eventually.

5. I haven't read or seen any of them.
But I intend to see the movies, just that I hadn't seen the first two and didn't want to see them out of order. I'm interested in reading the books at some point, too, but my book list is long right now.

6. From a dyxlectics point of view
Edited on Wed Dec-17-03 02:40 PM by Kamika
I was meaning to read the books for ages.. but it never happened, I'm dyxlectic so reading books was never an easy quest for me, it got EASIER over the years but a book like lotr was and is still not easy..

I did read the story about Bilbo when I was 15 or so and it was a nightmare.

I saw the first movie and then read the book. Whenever I'd get lost in the book I could imagine the movie and I'd know how the book looked.. sounds weird I know.

I managed to read the book EASILY and I couldn't thank the maker of the movies enough.

I actually managed to read the ENTIRE book2 before movie2 probably because I started right after book1.

I've REALLY tried to read the 3rd book but it just wont happen.. I look forward to seeing the movie so I can read the book :D

It REALLY REALLY REALLY helps to see a movie and then read a book if you have a hard time reading books

7. Peter Jackson & his collaborators
talked about the changes they made in the extended editions--in the commentary tracks & special features. They knew that not everybody would like the plot changes. I'm not sure about all of them myself, but the whole book (originally, it was just one) could not fit even into three movies without editing. To present the whole plot, unchanged, a long miniseries (maxiseries?) would really work better.

But the filmmakers really loved the book & it shows. They emphasized that they wanted the right look & feeling and I believe they succeeded. The casting was generally excellent. State of the art computer graphics were used, but much of the look comes from the amazing scenery of New Zealand, impressive sets, and painstaking detail work on costuming & weaponry.

I have a long history with Tolkien. Well aware of the differences, they did not disrupt the flow of the story. The story took hold of me & carried me along. Give it a chance.
