I have 12 flights booked from now until 9/14
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 09:51 AM by Patiod
I think I'm going to cry  All domestic, but still, I foresee my life getting really #$%# miserable -- long lines and lots of searches.

I haven't checked luggage in 4 years (except when going on vacation with my over-packing SO) and have no intention of starting now - this is the Lost Luggage Capitol of the US.

Travel starts 8/21, they'd better have this all nonsense sorted out by then.

Thank you for letting me cry on the Lounge's big broad collective shoulder......

1. Bring a good book with you
when you travel.

I'm going to Vegas in 3 weeks and I hope it's cleared up by then, I can't imagine 12 flights

Last time I went to Vegas was in October 2001, why do terrorists like to hit right before I go to Vegas? I know it's not really about me ;-)

7. BOOKS plural!
I always have at least 2 good books and a magazine. If I fly Sundays, I pick up the NYT, which, if you include the crossword and magazine, occupies the entire flight to LA or SFO.

$5 for 4+ hours of entertainment, and one that the flight attendents are delighted recycle so THEY can read it - not a bad deal

Jeez, I'm glad I'm not a flight attendent right now! People are already really mean to them.

I miss it terribly. I get to go back sometimes for work, though.

3. I feel your pain, I have six flights in the next two weeks
Then another 6 in September. I am not looking forward to it. I shave with Gel, use shower gel and drink a bottle of water every two hours or so. I am going to be miserable.

4. I have to check my luggage
I refuse to spend 4 days in Vegas with my hair looking like total crap, I need my hair products.

I'm not upset about not beign able to carry on certain things, my hair really isn't more important then thousands of lives, but i like it to look good.

35. I fly a lot
Edited on Thu Aug-10-06 04:40 PM by dr.strangelove
I do 120,000 miles a year or so. I never check my personal items. I've lost luggage or had luggage delayed too often. I always have a set of undergarments, shaving and showering supplies in my carry on so I can just buy a suit if needed and still get where I need to go. Even if I just wear the suit I flew in, I at least will be clean under it. I guess not any more.

10. Could you bring an empty water bottle or two and fill them at the
water fountain in the secure part of the airport? I'd assume (although I guess I can't assume anything) that stuff acquired beyond security, though the airport vendors (or a drinking fountain) would be OK? That you could still buy water, juice, soda, etc. and carry them on board?

16. That's a good idea - I'm used to drinking tap water
I'm just hoping they don't re-institute the gate-side searches.

22. Hm...per post 21, beverages purchased gateside must be consumed
before boarding.

WHY!?!?! This makes no sense, unless they think the airport vendors are selling explosives.

5. I am flying international on 8/21
and was planning on only carry on luggage.

I am going to the caribbean, but still, now I will have to check my luggage (and risk having 4 people help themselves to my stuff).

Plus, I am bringing Lil MB, so I will already have to deal with extra bullshit because I am taking a child out of the US.

I feel your pain Patoid. I can't imagine 12 flights.

8. My husband travels every week for work.
He will probably go back in September. (He had a bypass in June)

I think he is going to be doing a lot more driving.

This blows.

11. AFAIK, you don't HAVE to check luggage
You just can't take any liquids (shampoo, contact solution, etc) in your carry-on. I know it's a pain, but potentially you could buy such things at your destination.

If it were me, it would be worth it not to stand in the luggage check-in lines.

17. Just so long as they don't get obsessive & confiscate make-up
Or other stuff that's harder to replace.

I NEVER NEVER NEVER check luggage if I'm traveling for business.

This is what I found on the Transportation/Safety Administration website:

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE.

SUCH ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.

Exceptions: Baby formula and medicines, which must be presented for inspection at the checkpoint.

Beverages purchased in the boarding area, beyond the checkpoint, must be consumed before boarding because they will not be permitted on board the aircraft.

Passengers traveling from the United Kingdom to the United States will be subject to a more extensive screening process.

These measures will be constantly evaluated and updated as circumstances warrant.

http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/threat-change-passenger_guidance.shtm

If you wear contact lenses, be aware you won't be able to carry on any eye wetting drops so you might wear glasses instead.

I understand in Britain electronics of any kind (cell phones, laptops, ipods, even auto key fobs) must be put in checked baggage because those small devices could hide detonators.

So I guess liquid or "creamy" makeup is not allowed. But they haven't updated the Prohibited Items list, so I can't say for sure. Try this:

For questions or concerns about Travel Tips, Permitted and Prohibited Items, and information on filing a claim for lost, stolen or damaged items, please call the TSA Contact Center.

27. Found this on makeup
From an AP article:

The new ban on all liquids and gels from carry-on luggage left people with little choice but to throw away juice boxes, bags full of makeup, perfume and bottles of liquor and wine. Baby formula and medicines were exempt but had to be inspected.

AP Photo: Maintenance man Ricardo Zarate loads up some of the items, such as lipstick, lip balm and other liquid products into garbage bags along the bridge to the A concourse in Denver International Airport Thursday, Aug. 10, 2006, after passengers dropped the items while waiting to pass through the security checkpoint. A terror plot uncovered in the United Kingdom forced stepped up security measures to go into place at U.S. airports.

Maybe you can ship your makeup etc from hotel to hotel?

15. Sunnyvale is one of my destinations
but I'm coming in through SFO. Thought about San Jose, but I'm obsessed by only taking non-stops and there weren't any available. Smaller airports are often more managable.

You don't want to be flying into or out of San Jose right now. EVERYTHING is under construction. It's a mess. I don't look forward to that nightmare of getting to the rental cars again. We walked FOREVER to get to the bus that takes you out to the depot.

I flew into it last time, but was really happy I decided to fly out of Sacramento going back. Piece of cake, there.

Wife's late night flight from Denver got delayed two hours 15 minutes because of mechanical problems and switched planes. She arrived at 2:51 am, we got home at 3:45 am.

I so love United. They've done us wrong repeatedly now.

32. check it? not a chance
I am going to burn a DVD for my files and bill my clients for a new laptop for use in the UK. they won't be happy, but it's the only way I can see to do it safely. I may, instead, simply FedEx everything overnight and travel with just the clothes on my back. this is the wave of the future, I think.

plus, remember that many airports use magnetic screening devices for checked bags, watch your hard drive get wiped! good times.
