Did any famous people attend your high school?
And I mean "did they ever attend", and not necessarily while you were there.

Name the High School, the place, and the people.

For me:

Chamberlain High School - Tampa, FL

Steve Garvey (LA Dodgers 70's & 80's)
Lauren Hutton (actress)

1. Not me but my brother's yearbook
Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 09:24 AM by demnan
had a picture of Jim Morrison (the Doors) in it with a crew cut looking like the General's son that he was. This was like 1962, 1963 and Jim was in the class ahead of my brother at T.C. Williams High School, Alexandria, VA.

On edit: My brother didn't even know who Jim Morrison was and this had to be pointed out to him later by me.

53. Morrison was the son of an Admiral...
Jim's dad, George S. Morrison, was skipper of the USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31)in 1963-1964, and was later promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral.

2. Kelly Slater used to hang out at my office
Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 09:31 AM by Atman
I went to school with Lu Ann Fernald, Playboy playmate (don't remember which month) in 1978. But she's not really famous.

However...Kelly Slater, the pro surfer...he used to hang around my office, friends with my partner's son. (Small town...we all went to the same school). We'd pay them (they were pre-teen at the time, I think) to stuff subscription envelopes. We even used a tiny Kelly Slater in an ad for my magazine. The picture is hysterical...we put Kelly (about 3'10") next to a giant 6'8" surfer dude, as a comment about changing styles. I wonder if he'd sue me now if I posted the picture? As publisher, I do own the rights...I think...

It was very weird to purchase the Kelly Slater Pro Surfing video game for my kids this Christmas...three other guys I know are listed on the box, too. And now I'm land-locked in New England.

Thanks for bummin' me out!

On edit...fellow Floridian. This was in Cocoa Beach.

He was a minor movie star. His best-known role was as an alien officer in "V." That was in Miami Springs in the late '50s.
His mother was a school teacher at Miami Springs Elementary.

Hialeah Junior High and Miami Jackson High (I think)

At Stevenson, there are hallways that you can't see the end of. Whenever I walk through it, I feel like I'm at an airport.

I think 5 current or former NFL players. (Right now, only Mike Allstott.)

At least one major leaguer. (Bill Gullickson, who was there when i was but was a couple years younger.)

Terry Gannon, who is a sportscaster for ABC and played hoops for Duke (i think).

Roger Hewett (a year younger) has appeared in several movies and Broadway productions. (Stretching the definition of "famous" here, i guess. He's a character actor and not a leading role guy.)

And two infamous. I won't mention names. But, one killed a 13 year old kid, while we were still in high school, for throwing a snowball at his car. The other slaughtered his whole family and shot it out with police about 10 years after graduation.

kicked out for wearing the Star of David a couple of years ago.

Harrison Central, in Gulfport, Mississippi.

The atheletes: Greg Hibbard (pitcher in Chicago for a while), Matt Lawton (outfielder for Cleveland, Minnesota), his brother Marcus (two weeks with the Mets in the 80s before getting injured), and Sidney Coleman (NFL for a few years).

I met Brett Farve once when we were kids, but he went to a rival high school. My best friend's sister had a crush on him, so we used to go around chanting "Amy loves Brett Favre." She used tosay she hated him, that he was stuck up, and that he thought he was so special because he played quarterback, but that he was no good and only played because his daddy was the coach.

The DLR video star was Marilyn Holt, a rather large woman who did some comic closeups in the videos. She was the drama teacher there until just before I got there, when she left to become "famous."

Edited on Thu Dec-18-03 10:46 AM by slackmaster
Actors Gregory Peck, Cliff Robertson, and Raquel Welch come to mind. Mr. Robertson is an active lifetime member of our alumni association.

The late guitarist Robin Crosby of the defunct heavy metal band Ratt.

Rolf Benirschke who was a place-kicker for the San Diego Chargers played famously on the LJHS varsity football team, once overturning a game in the final seconds of play by achieving a 68-yard field goal.

Numerous golfers including Craig Stadler.

We also have at least one astronaut - James Newman.

With the kind of people living in the La Jolla area I'm sure there are dozens of familiar names from politics, law, medicine, the military, and the arts but I am out of coffee and Raquel kicks all their asses anyway.

I am hoping that sometime in the next 5 years you will know both of their names as well as Adam Sandler and Oliver Stone. :) Robert has sold a screenplay so he's on his way!!!

Funny thing is, is that the show "Freaks and Geeks" looked and sounded so much like my high school years it was unnerving.

are professional artists, writers and musicians. Some have become quite famous.

The drummer on Dylan's "Time Out of Mind," Emmy Lou's "Wrecking Ball," Norah Jones' album, Joni Mitchell's last album, and many many more well-known albums is a good friend of mine from high school. His name is Brian Blade. He also plays in Joshua Redman's band and appears on virtually every album produced by Daniel Lanois. His brother, another friend of mine from high school, plays drums in Emmy Lou's band.

The bass player from "Better than Ezra" is also a high school friend. He is an exceptionally smart guy who was majoring in Applied Mathematics at LSU when he fell into this band. It's funny to see their videos where he plays the part of a rocker and know that inside he is really just a math geek.

The accordion player for The Gourds and the lead guitarist for the Damnantions TX (they are brothers) also are high school buds of mine.

There are several other high school friends I know who are doing studio work as musicians.

I will be missing the Damnations next show though. I'll be seeing The Derailers insteaad. Their lead singer is quitting to devote more time to his family. This is the last chance I'll get to see them. At The Broken Spoke, no less.

I'm going to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl and I'm already lining up the shows I have to attend. I think Friday night will be Stanton Moore, George Porter, Jr, Johnny Vidakovich and friends at Tipitinas.

Saturday is probably going to be Anders Osborne at Mid-City Lanes (Rock n' Bowl). North Mississippi All Stars are also playing that night at House of Blues. I hate to miss North Mississippi, but I can't stand the House of Blues' corporatization of live music shows.

I talked to a buddy last week who went to the Austin City Limits Festival this year. He raved about the festival and the after-hours shows. I think that one is a must see for me next year.

We had several female division 1 college athletes, but I don't think any have been in the Olympics or play WNBA. The male athletes were not as good, comparatively so no pro football or basketball athletes. A couple mayors of larger nearby towns went to our school as did one of the county judges. My ex boyfriend and his brother own a computer company, but it isn't Microsoft or anything like that. My high school didn't exactly prepare students to go onto bigger and better things.

103. Terri Brooks, Semi-Famous Murder Victim
She was hideously murdered in the mid-80s. The murder was so brutal that it made national news off-and-on for weeks. It seems that Terri objected to being dispatched so early in life, and fought like a pack of crazed hell-cats against a much larger, stronger attacker. The resulting mess was so spectacular that it drew a crowd of gawkers and cops from every jurisdiction within a 30-minute drive -- at 6:30 AM, no less.

She was managing a fast food joint in the armpit 'burbs of Philadelphia, and was closing for the night. After having locked up, she counted the till, and shortly thereafter, went to those great Golden Arches in The Sky sometime before dawn.

Of course, several young African-American men were implicated (enthusiastically, by a "hard-hitting conservative newspaper", i.e., a local racist rag), but released for lack of evidence. Of course, the cops just had to be lying when they said that a couple of black dudes weren't the perps.

Then, a few years ago, one of the investigating officers, acting on a decade-old hunch, obtained a warrant to fish through the trash of her boyfriend at the time. After comparing some DNA evidence from the crime scene and from loverboy's cigarette butts, he was confronted and confessed to the foul deed. Case closed.

According to the confession, Terri was breaking up with him, to which he objected rather forcefully. His confession spared him a trip to the Pennsylvania death house.

I knew Terri pretty well. We were an "item" once upon a time -- when we were ten. It was 1968, and with the Summer of Love and LSD and all of that stuff ... well, actually, we just hung out at the bus stop, and in 1968, that's all it took for the elementary school banns of engagement to be published.

Terri had a pretty unpleasant life; her parents divorced years too late, and her teenage years did not yield easy rows to hoe. Her maturing taste in men was abominable. In spite of the numerous and early knocks, she was getting her life together when it ended. The last time we ran into each other was a few years before The Incident, when I worked for a cocaine-addicted entrepreneur a block away from where she worked. She was chatty and friendly as could be.

Every few weeks, Court TV runs The Terri Brooks Story. Getting murdered is a hell of a bad way to acheive immortality.

Bye-bye, Terri ... there's still a few of us who think about you every now and then.

Merry Christmas, wherever you may be.

--bkl

114. Brian McBride, MLS (Columbus Crew) and World Cup Star
He went to Buffalo Grove High School, Buffalo Grove, IL. Class of '89, I believe. He also attended my middle school.

He came back to give a presentation at the school last year, and a funny thing happened with our German teacher. The teacher, we'll call him Herr G, doesn't speak English around any students, or at least tries not to, and is a huge soccer fan. So after the presentation, during a lunch hour, he sees McBride and walks up to talk to him. My friend, seeing this, ran over to the area and just stood around, looking at Herr G. Herr G, unable to say anything for fear of letting the jig up, just stood there gawking at my friend, and McBride. McBride, obviously confused, just made his way through the cafeteria and Herr G never got to talk to him.

MLS Bio

Some other guy who was on a Dodgers World Series team went to our school. No notable non-athletes that I know of, unfortunately.

I only remember Mare Winningham, because she played the guitar and sang at assemblies. The other 2 were pointed out to me by another Chancellor here at DU.

120. One of the local newsmen
attended the same high school as myself ten years or so before I did. The only other thing of note was that my high school was the school filmed and used as the setting for "West Beverly High" on Beverly Hills 90210 in the years when the gang on there were high school students. :-)

because it was in the Hollywood, CA area. The most famous was Mary Tyler Moore at Immaculate Heart High School, in Los Angeles, California. I believe she was the class of 55' or thereabouts. I don't remember exactly.

127. Timothy Leary
Classical High School, Springfield Mass. He beat me there by about 50 years. When the school closed in 1986, there was a reunion open to everyone who had ever graduated. I guess his invitation got lost in the mail. Too bad, he's probably the most brilliant graduate (other than me) of that school.

Bret was one year ahead of me, Owen a couple behind. Never really knew them, we travelled in different circles. :eyes:

Somebody else fairly famous went there, but I can't think of who it is.

A damn good guitarist. Recently produced Anti-Flag's latest album. He went to Libertyville High School, here in the North Shore suburbs of Chicago. I went to that high school for my first two years.

Then the district built a new high school where I live, Vernon Hills. So, I went to Vernon Hills High School for my last two years.

Given its first graduating class was in 2002 (of which I was a part of) nobody yet counts as famous. If I have anything to do with it though, my name will be in lights. For what? God only knows. Most likely something terrible. =)

EDIT: Looking through the thread, forgot about Marlon Brando, and Brett Butler. Brando was booted for, if I remember correctly, riding his motorcycle around the indoor track in the Brainerd Building gym.

132. Jonas Salk and Julius Rosenberg
Edited on Mon Dec-22-03 09:53 PM by markses
The High School still mentions Jonas Salk. Had to read E.L. Doctorow's "Book of Daniel" to hear about Julius Rosenberg.

On Edit:
Ooops: Looks like I was wrong about Rosenberg, though Doctorow definitely made the claim in BoD. Googled it. With a million eyes, all bugs are shallow, apparently.:-)
