So, I'm not done after all.
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 11:06 PM by mutley_r_us
I received a letter from my college telling me I still need to take two classes before I can graduate. Someone fucked up — maybe me, maybe my adviser, whatever. I don't even know what really happened. It's complicated. My adviser told me in January I was done, but it turns out he was wrong.

My whole family is pissed at me now. My parents think it's my fault, because I should have known that I was getting bad information.

Sometimes I think it's just never going to happen. I've been trying to finish school for so long, and just keep running into setback after setback after setback. I'm so sad. :(

Thanks for letting me vent, Loungies.

3. You just described a nightmare I have on occasion.
I got a C- in Physics in the last semester of my senior year. Any questions? I thought not. Anyway, about twice a year I dream I failed it and have to return. I don't get to return to 19 years of age, however. Then it'd be okay. Can you pick them up as night classes or something? I'm sure this is v. disappointing.

4. Yeah, the classes I need are available for the fall semester.
I just planned to move out of my apartment this week, and get a job. I have no idea where I'm going to stay now. I'll probably have to crash on my sister's couch until I can find a room to rent or something.

7. Do ever hear that cliche about how everything happens for a ...
..reason? Maybe that's it. Maybe you will learn something intrinsically valuable for your life in those additional courses, or you'll network, or find a friend who will impact your life. This sounds like one of those things that might have a reason...who knows? I like to believe in things like that. I hope you don't find my response offensive...I only intend it to be positive and somehow comforting. Hugs.. ..

13. Sometimes degree audits are erroneous.
Have you met with an advisor to manually go over your coursework? Computer-generated degree audits, which determine how many more courses you need, are sometimes wrong, because they're only as good as the humans who enter them. Get an appointment with the appropriate person, and go in there prepared with your own records (i.e. transcript or grade slips).

I saw it happen on several occasions when I worked at colleges and universities, and when I was finishing my master's degree, I got a call from the grad assistant to my advisor telling me I lacked three courses to graduate. I knew flat out he was wrong, because I watch that kind of stuff like a hawk. I got my unofficial transcript and went armed with all my grade slips. Both my advior and the grad assistant were there, and when we went over everything, I was right and they were wrong. :) I had even taken my comps the last semester as scheduled.

I feel your pain, sweetie. I hope it works out positively!

14. Welcome to the club!
In college I once spent an hour on the phone being told why I could not get my degree. Apparently ever!

I took a course and aced it. When it came time to graduate, I was told I couldn't. I had waited a while to declare my major (Psych? Soc? Anthro? English?) Turns out one of the required courses for my Psych degree was the one I aced. But they'd changed the course number. The old number no longer met the requirements..... but I couldn't repeat it because you could only repeat a course if you ended up with a D or less. Catch 22!

So I called the Prof and wailed and moaned and cried! She said "Oh screw it! The only difference is I added an extra essay! Give me a few minutes and you'll have an A under the new course number and will graduate! Idiots!"

And she did and I did and the rest is history :)

So instead of feeling sad and shocked.... go find your allies! :)

And good luck!

:hugs:

Khash.

and it's a light one. I hope you can ignore the BS from family. You'll have that degree soon. :)

18. same thing happened with my ex
at first I freaked and thought, shit, my ex is posting here, but then I remembered your picture...

yes, i was quite surprised. She was supposed to graduate in May and she was really freaked about about conflict over whether she would walk or not and then she called and said she still has two more classes to take before she gets her degree. She's already gotten a job in her field though, which was computer graphics. I guess if she does get these two classes done she'll be 38 when she graduates. Just hang in there. I know it's hard and I don't know why these college admin can't get it together but I get the impression this stuff happens all the time.
