Sad day, 16 years ago we lost Stevie Ray Vaughan
He had the potential to be the greatest blues guitarist ever.
This is not a day of celebration.
Save the celebrations for October 3, which is his birthday.

1. *A sad day indeed* Eric Johnson wrote a great tribute to him called SRV
and Stevie's brother Jimmie plays on the recording. It's off Venus Isle.

give his music a listen. You've got me curious...

16. Umm..HELL yes.
Goood; solid; rockin' blues with the SRV twist and a Jeff Healy soul. I love the singer; he carries the music very well. I saw him & his band open for VH a few years back on the VH3 tour. Worth it!!!
Try the first and second albums first.

3. Friend of mine saw the last show...
Says he even saw the helicopter leaving from near the venue... but then again, he told me this almost 16 years ago, so I may be misremembering that last part.

There's an Austin City Limits of SRV they play now and again on PBS that's just phenomenal.

Remember the flack about how he "demanded" to open all the gigs when he toured on David Bowie's "Let's Dance" tour? Bet the folks who were bitching then are glad now that the got to see him perform.

4. Bonnie Raitt said he was the best ever
And she knows the blues as well as anyone. I certainly rank him in the top 5.

I remember that morning... I was working a summer job during college, and getting ready to leave, when the news broke. I cried all the way to work, stunned.

I was lucky enough to see him back in 1985 at the Boathouse in Norfolk, VA, up close. Fantastic, amazing show.

RIP SRV.

6. I love the Boathouse!!! (and here's a rare SRV clip for all y'all)
What a great, dive-y place to see a show. I lived in Norfolk briefly before moving to DC, and saw a couple of different shows there.

I was lucky enough to see him twice--once in TX, and once in FL, right after he'd cleaned up. I still miss him.

btw, here's a neat clip of SRV with one of my VERY favorite vocalists, Maria McKee--and several other great musicians--on David Sanborn's late-night show from the 80s:

7. Thanks for the clip!
I don't think I know of any other DUers who have heard of that place. I started seeing concerts there in 1983, right up until I moved back west in 1988. Saw LOTS of shows there. Back when it opened, it didn't have a beer garden, and being underage then, I could get right up to the stage with the rest. Later, they fenced off the stage down one side for the beer garden. Still could get up close and unobstructed though. It wasn't as if we didn't sneak in our own liquor. :D

5. That was an utterly HORRID day for me
I was never a Stevie fan until a couple years earlier. Me and a friend were at the KY State Fair in L'ville. She'd run into some people she knew from her hometown who happened to have extra tickets to Stevie Ray's show. Not one to look a free ticket in the mouth, we joined them. He was mezmerizing. I still wasn't a huge fan of his records but that was one of the most amazing shows I'd ever seen (didn't hurt that we were right up front, I'm sure. ;))

Then, on this day in 1990 I was near bursting with my first kid. I was really tiny and they'd discovered she was not only breech, but also facing inward. I was scheduled to have a procedure to try to coax her into the proper position. This essentially consisted of 2 doctors and nurses on either side of me. I was strapped to a table very much in the Jesus Christ/condemned killer pose. They then used the heels of their hands, forearms, etc to try to get her to turn. It might not sound like much but it was EXCRUCIATING.

After that failed and they scheduled a C-section for 2 days later, I waddled my 9 months pregnant/in agonizing pain ass to my non-air conditioned in the boiling hell of August car to drive to my non-air conditioned in the boiling hell of August 4th floor walk-up.

Heard the news about Stevie right as I pulled into the parking spot. :(

11. He was great
One of the very best guitarists to ever walk the Earth, as far as I'm concerned. I could listen to the dude all day...have, too. :-)

RIP, SRV...

13. that day, for guitarists,
was like the day Townes Van Zandt died was for songwriters.

Everyone moved up one.

Wasn't Clapton supposed to have been riding with Stevie Ray?

14. I remember that day.
I was at work very early in the morning, packing up boxes to move my office from one building to another, listening to the radio. The first news reports said Eric Clapton was on the plane; the truth came out a little later in the morning.

17. THANK you.
I get into SO many arguments about that. I really think he interpreted the song the way it's supposed to be played. Not to knock Hendrix; it's just that he was SO much of a genius and SO inspired that the music came almost TOO fast; if that makes any sense. I just love the way Stevie finishes every note to perfection.

18. I was blessed to see him perform VC live in '85, while supposedly
in the depths of his heroin addiction, and it was an absolutely incredible and amazing performance! Hendrix' version never really had the ability to move me again following SRV's version. I think that particular performance redefined "guitar artistry" for me.

19. I believe you can get his El Mocambo show on DVD now.
From around 1984, and perhaps the single best show he's ever put on (that was recorded, anyway).

Eagle_Eye, Thanks for posting this.

I'm a polytheist! I believe in SRV and Clapton! And I might have to add Jimi too.

Best guitarist?
Watch Stevie's hands in this vid, playing Rude Mood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7o8yu8ZFws

The great tribute song to him, Six Strings Down....

His brother, Jimmy wrote this one...a true demo song, if there ever were one...

Tick Tock

One night while sleeping in my bed I had a beautiful dream
That all the people of the world got together on the same wavelength,
and began helping one another
Now in this dream, universal love was the theme of the day
Peace and understanding and it happened this way

The sick, the hungry, had smiles on their faces,
the tired and the homeless had family all around
The streets and the cities were all beautiful places,
and the walls came tumblin' down

People of the world all had it together,
had it together for the boys and the girls
And the children of the world look forward to a future
Remember
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock people, time's tickin' away
Remember that
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock people, time's tickin' away

I had a vision of blue skies from sea to shining sea,
all the trees in the forest stood strong and tall again
Everything was clean and pretty and safe for you and me,
the worst of enemies became the best of friends

People of the world all had it together,
had it together for the boys and the girls
Children of the world look forward to a future

Remember
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock people, time's tickin' away
Remember that
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock people, time's tickin' away

Remember that, remember that
Remember that, remember that

People of the world all had it together,
had it together for the boys and the girls
Children of the world look forward to a future

Remember
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock people, time's tickin' away
Remember that
Tick tock, tick tock, tick tock people, time's tickin' away

.....

I wipe a tear or two every time of think of Stevie.

21. I heard it on the radio in Argentina. What a downer.
Then I had to explain to the Argentine guy I was driving with who SRV was.

Here's a great clip of SRV and Jimmie playing the same guitar at the same time:

22. Saw him in Amherst, MA
It was at the Fine Arts Center Auditorium at UMASS, Amherst. The Shaboo All-Stars had opened for Stevie. An awesome show! A few of my guitar-playin' buddies and I all gathered together to see him. My favorite song was SRV's cover of "Superstition", the Stevie Wonder song. It was the only time I had seen him live.

A year after college was done, I was in Saratoga, NY to do some job training with a few coworkers. We were just pulling into a local restaurant for dinner. When we were exiting the vehicle, we heard music off in the distance. A coworker and I pause to listen. After a second or two there was no doubt, it was Stevie. We just gave each other a look and said "Hey! It's Stevie!"

Stevie was playing a show somewhere nearby and sounding damn good, even from a distance. I guess there was some sort of performing arts center in Saratoga, NY. Then just days later it was broadcast that he had died in the crash.

True talent always dies! Explain to me why we loose talents like Jimi Hendrix and SRV but get stuck with Jessica Simpson?

23. Saw him w/Double Trouble at a joint in Dallas on Greenville
Avenue just north of Northwest Highway several times. Believe the place was called Christopher's.Also at Antone's,when it was still on Sixth Street and Lou Ann Barton was their singer.Believe that band was called Triple Threat. Man, that was about thirty years ago, before he'd recorded Texas Flood.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, from Oak Cliff,Texas. One of a kind.
