Buy new headphones buddy
More adventures at the cafe I'm in. A guy is sitting next to me with gigantic earphones. Clearly from the 80's at the latest, but probably the 70's. I was thinking he probably has an old time tape cassette player, but its actually hooked up too...an IPOD! I guess he got an ipod but preferred the headphones he got with his stereo back in the 70's. I wonder what he's listening to with his ipod and retro headphones.

1. I recently bought a pair of large headphones for $40
Returned them because the quality was worthy of a $25 model from 1996... Sony too.

3. I hate to break it to you
but all the best headphones are big. It is simply not possible to get super high fidelity sound from earbud-size drivers. Check out some Sennheiser or Grado headphones (probably the two best manufacturers) if you don't believe me.

4. Absolutely.

If I could just place two great sounding speakers on my shoulders and use rope to tie them to my ears, I'd probably try it. My headpones broke recently and I have looked at the frequency ranges for tons of different headphones. The big ones are the only ones I have found so far with the dynamic range I am looking for (somewhere between 10-30k or better if I can afford it.) I can no longer hear the small headphones at all and my eardrums hurt if I try to use them, so big is it for me too.

8. I've got a bunch
I like a lot, but my favorites are my Sennheiser HD-590s--they sound really, really terrific, and didn't break the bank.

Oh, and they're comfortable over long periods.

11. Thanks for the recommendation.

I am definitely looking for the best I can afford. I'll check those out when the time comes to buy some more. For now, I am saving up. I am expecting something less than $100. If not, I know I can't top $120 or so. Comfortable is important. I had one pair that had the foam earpads. I kept having to go to Radio Shack and replace them. Those headphones lasted almost 15 years until Radio Shack quit selling those earpad replacements. I miss those headphones. They were called Pro-135 or something like that, made by Optimus or Realistic. It's been years, so I can't remember.

Oh and a correction to my earlier post. I goofed. That was supposed to be 10-30k. The 20-20k headphones suck, IMHO, but like I said, I can't even hear those.

13. Ok. I guess I'm the one who needs new headphones.
But if he's listening to MP3 files on an ipod I can't imagine it makes much difference anyway. The reduced sound quality of mp3 files is why I haven't bought one.

14. That's certainly true
though an ipod can rip things to apple lossless, and most non-apple digital audio players can use similar lossless formats.

Now if only iTunes would sell lossless music...

10. Hey, I have huge headphones, and I LOVE them.
I can actually hear music through them, rather than having those tiny "cool" headphones or earbuds constantly falling off/out of my ears and generally disrupting my musical experience.

:P

12. I got big ones too
My left ear's canal is smaller than my right. I can not hear as well out of the left and it drives me insane to use headphones that try to fit in the ear. Know how annoying it is to only hear full base and treble in one ear?

Next time you see someone using big headphones remember that not everyone is apparently as fortunate as you are...

15. I cannot hear out of my left ear as well either because
of a persistent infection years ago. I wouldn't like the ear buds anyhow though. If you have to hold something to your head to hear, you might as well try my big regular speaker idea. :hi:

18. I'd Also Wonder If The Ipod...
... would have enough power to drive such large speakers without having to turn the volume up to max... but I think that would also distort the music when it's too amplified.

Maybe he was just doing it to look cool, or different. (I'm imagining that he must have had bell bottoms, platform shoes and a big afro.)

19. After I wrote this post his cell phone rang...
It would the loudest cell phone ring I have ever heard and the voice on the other end was loud enough for me to hear clearly from where I'm sitting. Obviously this older gentleman has hearing problems and basically I'm just an asshole for making fun of him. Oh well. :)
