New Line Cinema’s "Snakes on a Plane" was the top grossing film in the country this past weekend (August 18 -- 20), with a $15.2 million gross in its debut.
The film, which was released in 3,555 theaters, attracted a broad audience that was balanced evenly across genders (51% male, 49% female) and ages (53% over 25 years old). Exit polls indicated that moviegoers enjoyed the film, scoring it well above norms in both ratings and recommendations with 67% of those polled grading the film as “better than expected.”
New Line's action-thriller opened to strong reviews, as well. Christy Lemire of the Associated Press says, “It’s the best time you’ll have at the movies all summer, if not all year." Claudia Puig of USA Today writes, "Those who love a thrill-ride disaster movie and buckets of spurting blood will have a great time with S.O.A.P."
In addition, New Line partnered with Varitalk, a provider of digital audio solutions, to create a viral marketing campaign for Snakes on a Plane using customized voice messages from star Samuel L. Jackson. Over one million messages have been sent to date.
