Is anyone in a position to help rescue German Shepherds?
It is a tragedy that his has been allowed to go on for this long but
it has and these people need as much help as they can get. Most
rescues might be set up to care for 10 to 20 dogs at a time and it
would now appear that the number of dogs involved here is about 160.
I can only imagine how overwhelming this has to be for those involved
but would encourage everyone on the list to consider helping however
they can. Even if you can't foster a dog or help with placement or
transport, consider making a donation.

PLEASE CROSSPOST!

This is Beth Riddle writing regarding a very serious atrocity that
has occurred in our state and in our little German Shepherd
community. A mentally ill woman was served a warrant on Dec 16th and
Dec 17th regarding the removal of animals from her property. The
first wave consisted of about 90 dogs and over 70 of them were
purebred GSDs. Last night at 11pm I received a phone call from my
colleague that had just finished cataloging the final pull from the
woman's house. 160 young GSDs , nursing mothers, pups, and just a
small handful were other breeds. The GSD community is shocked. I am
crying and shaking as I write you, because we worked so hard
yesterday to pull just the first 22 out of the shelter and get them
into rescue. Then as we were going to bed feeling pretty good, I
received this phone call. The holidays make finding kennel space
impossible. We are begging, we never beg, but we are on our knees to
former adopters, contributors, anyone who loves German Shepherds to
please help this huge rescue effort. The shelter cannot coordinate
the rescues, so it is a team effort consists of Northern IL GSD
Rescue, their founder and President is logging and cataloging the
dogs, Chicagoland GSD Rescue is digging up a couple spaces and on the
phone, Central Illinois GSD Rescue is contacting nationally and
coordinating transport, foster care, and will also be pulling some of
these angels. They are everywhere at the shelter. They are in cages,
kennels, tied to the walls, and though they were eating dirt, had no
food, are close to starvation, they just look at us and wag their
tails. It is absolutely killing us to see this. We could use money
for medical care, we could use puppy canned food and puppy dry food,
puppy pan to feed them in, crates, kennels and most of all space!
Anyone with a farm that could serve as a temporary M*A*S*H unit, or
shelter. I stress there is no where to go with these kids.
Transporters for national distribution. I can't even think. IF you
want to help, please call at 217-337-5832 or 217-377-7135 and we'll
figure something out. Thank you for your consideration.

3. What are the other breeds?
I'd be interested in hosting Border Collies or Aussies out of this nightmare.

8. Maybe St.Clone works in BC/Aussie rescue
that was my assumption, anyway. :-) I'm glad people are reading this; the more this gets around, the better!

4. Thanks so much for the kicks, guys
and let me also say that the website permits donations through PayPal...even $5 or $10 will help immensely with the necessary food, vet bills, etc. Any amount is desperately needed.

An update - there turned out to be more than 200 dogs total, and most are under 9 months old. So if you've ever wanted a German Shepherd and you're in a position to help, contact the shelters listed on the website.

(I'm not affiliated with these folks at all, I'm just passing this on in the hopes of getting them a little more help.)

I think my cat needs some company. He's had it too easy as of late.

10. Aw shit.
We've had a German Shepherd for the last 30+ years. Two helped raise our daughter. These are such noble, intelligent, affectionate, and loyal dogs. Nasha will be 13 next June, but I honestly don't think she'll make it that long. That's very old for a large dog, and she's getting pretty unsteady and feeble.

I wish I could take one of these. I'm being selfish. I retired in 1999, and Nasha has required more and more care since then. Helen and I would dearly love to be footloose and travel. We really can't afford long stays at boarding kennels in addition to travel expenses. Friends have offered to keep her here at home, but it's a lot to ask for friends to care for a sometimes incontinent dog with bouts of diarrhea.

I'll send some money for food, and forward this to anyone who I think might want a dog.

Do you have any idea how this woman came to have so many dogs? Especially purebreds? That's NOT cheap.

If you're thinking of getting a dog, you should know that purebred German Shepherds go for upwards of 300 bucks. This is a DEAL, folks.

12. It's probably too much stress
on your elder dog to ask her to accept a puppy at this stage of life, anyway.

Collectors are strange. They're often fairly well off, but they get themselves in so over their heads, without meaning to do harm to the animals - they usually really love them - that they can't even keep them clean or fed. It's a mental disorder in most of 'em. The poor animals are the ones who suffer in cases like this. Thankfully, they've been gotten out of there.

13. I wish we were in a position to get a puppy
but it wouldn't be fair with no fenced yard for it. I do love the herding breeds, though.

16. This has been posted on just about all the rescue lists.
I belong to a lot of lists for animal rescue, and just about every list has picked up on it. It's flying around the Internet now. I think those dogs will all be rescued.

22. I'm sorry I have 3 dogs right now.
I had a 21 year old (21 human years) terrier mutt that I had to put to sleep 4 years ago. I never cried so hard in my life as I did that day. That dog, Daisy, was the most loved dog ever in the bearfan's lifetime. She used to sleep at the foot of the bed with me and the first Mrs. bearfan. She was my baby girl.
