Saw Karen Hughes book at a Dollar Tree store near Washington,
DC. I don't know if that is unusual, but it did my heart and soul good when I saw it there for $1.00.

Is that what happens? Some rich person buys 5000 and they call it a hit at the bookstores? Then resale it at a $1.00 store.

I was in the Fredricksburg area and I saw MORE anti-Bush stickers than I see in Missouri.

1. First time I was aware of Bill O'Reilly
I was in a Dollar store and saw his book and thought "Wasn't that guy on some stupid tabloid TV show?" a month or so later I saw his show on Fox News. The rest is history.

2. I'm a book buyer; here's how it works--
and why the New York Times "stars" some bestselling books.

Wacky conservative pundit (Coulter, Scarborough, O'Reilly "writes" a book (more likely ghosted by Heritage Foundation interns).

Book is published almost invariably by Regnery or Thomas J. Nelson or there's another one whose name I can't come up with this early. Large, large print runs of 250,000 or often much more (sometimes up to a million in the case of a Coulter or O'Reilly). Large print runs are very unusual for non-fiction books as a general rule, but the RW publishing houses venture forth unafraid.

Pre-publication orders are sky-high; this is because RW fundraising projects buy oodles and oodles of the things at wholesale to give out to donors, etc.. This drives the book to the top of the bestseller lists even before reaching the shelves--even the donors couldn't care less about the books, in most cases--it's done strictly to drive the book up the bestseller charts. The result is that the same week it is published, it's already the number 1 bestseller (even if, as I say, it is "starred" by the NYT) which in turn drives retail sales. *Note that most bestseller charts are based on wholesale sales.

In short, publishers like Regnery aren't really interested in making lots of money; they serve as a propaganda outlet for the likes of the Heritage Foundation and that ilk. That's why they don't care if they have boxes and boxes of the books left over, which they often donate to public libraries in LARGE quantities (which reaally pisses us off--I buy for a library) or send them to brokers for as little as 10 cents a copy, only to be remaindered at a ridiculously low price as you saw.

In short, this may be the only case in the weird, wacky world of RW capitalism where money doesn't matter!

3. Regnery and White Power
someone posted a while ago a real and direct link between the owner of Regnery and the White Power movement. Literally one degree of seperation.

Yeah "Best selling author" implies that a lot of people agree with or are at least interested in what these people have to say. Also the charge of "liberal bias" is thrown at anyone who won't have them on their TV show.

5. Interesting--and Thomas J. Nelson has long been the leading publisher
--of BIBLES.

They also have a contract with Michael Savage.

I need a shower...

8. It's hardly the only instance.
FOX News and the Limbaugh radio show lost money for years before becoming profitable.

9. And being a NYTimes bestseller gets you on mainstream media
I mean, they fricking gave Ann Coulter a microphone to talk about her crap book and her shitty comment about the 9/11 widows. She was on all the morning shows and the thing is, no one is really buying her books retail

7. Where are you at in MO?
Just curious.

Also, finally starting to see more anti* stickers here. We've got quite a few yard signs now with the "Had enough? Vote Democrat" logo on them.

Hopefully good times are ahead for Missouri soon.

10. I'm in Kearney, Mo. Yes I'm hoping Missouri goes Blue
but you never know. I live in an area where there are more churches than banks, grocery stores, and schools. They came out in full force to vote for **** and his bunch.

11. Not too far from me.
I'm in Warrensburg-right up the road from Whiteman. You can guess how voting goes around here!

I've noticed more and more MO DUers on the boards. Maybe that's a good sign?

12. Dollar Tree store in Methuen, MA has piles of KH's book.
Always thought there was a catch to these fringe books being "best sellers"!
Wasn't Newt Gingrich's book deal his downfall?
