Two days ago i started working at a small family run deli in my area.
Several weeks ago the owner was incarcerated by immigration. Apparently, the family (originally from Lebanon) had been paying an attorney to file for their visa renewals. The attorney had not informed them that they were long ago eligible for naturalization. A few months back they paid the attorney expecting that their visas would be renewed as they have been in the past. The attorney took the money but had not submitted the paperwork.
The wife and their 17 year old daughter have been running everything since. The wife has some health problems and the daughter is trying to get through her honors classes in high school. She wants to go to medical school. This poor kid has been doing all the store paperwork, stock orders, paychecks, in addition to working in the store during the evening. It is not uncommon to see her attempting to finish her daunting load of homework at a small table in the store.
The wife is attempting to file a lawsuit to get the money refunded from the attorney. This is proving more difficult then anyone imagined. In the meantime her husband remains in incarceration. The store which had always been run by the husband and wife has had to hire staff adding an additional financial crunch.
Less than a week ago the wife asked me if i would be interested in helping out in the mornings. I did not hesitate. They are incredible people. They are loved by everyone in the area. The fact that anyone would take advantage of these people who do so much good for so many infuriates me. I am grateful for the opportunity to help them, i only wish i could do more.
Sorry for my vent, i am just feeling a little bit frustrated.
