I'm still swooning over Jeffrey (as a designer!) because his paper dress was by far the best of that challenge. I actually would have worn that dress happily. Michael's dress that round was fine, but definitely not my style.
This episode, I thought both Jeffrey and Michael's outfits were great. And importantly I think, they both fulfilled the challenge goal of a jet-setter look that traveled well. They both looked just as good when they stepped off the plane as when they got on.
I really liked Michael's preppy-meets-hip-hop Hampton's look. It was like Tommy Hilfiger but hipper and more interesting. I also liked that he took the constructive criticism that Tim gave in his walk through and didn't just pair it with a T-shirt as he originally planned, but was able to put together a cool shirt with short notice. I like the fact that he doesn't diss any of the other designers or get into the petty squabbles, but just thinks about his looks and gets his work done. The interpersonal dramas may draw some people in, but that's my least favorite part of the show. I'm watching for the clothes, dammit!
I loved Jeffrey's outfit, but I have always gravitated to that rock n' roll style. I agreed with the judges that it looked far more expensive than the $75 it cost to make. If I were to wear one of those two outfits, I would wear Jeffrey's look. That's a personal taste thing of course. In the toss up between those two, I'd have chosen Jeffrey's to win.
Laura's dress was very nice as usual. While her clothes are lovely, well made and elegant, they just don't seem that creative. I appreciate that she focuses on the details of design and construction, and honestly, I would wear that dress. I wouldn't wear it on a plane though, especially not with 3 inch stiletto sandals. It looked like a cocktail dress and I thought it was just too dressy for a flight, and had to be worn with totally impractical shoes. It did travel well.
Uli's dress also didn't seem like something I would fly in. It was too strappy and low in the back, she'd be freezing to death at altitude! Plus it looked like she fall right out of the bodice if she tried to lie down. It was also too long; she had to hold up the skirt to walk and that just isn't practical for running through airports. It was pretty, it looked like a nice tropical sundress. But she is kind of doing variations on the same theme week after week.
Vincent's look, surprisingly, was rather boring, but while not jet-setter exactly, it was certainly a cut above the average jeans and T-shirt that most people wear on a plane. It was comfortable and it traveled well. It was interesting that the one judge who liked this outfit was Francisco Costa from Calvin Klein, because Vincent's outfit was simple and streamlined, like a Calvin Klein.
Kayne's shirt was tacky and over-the-top. He just doesn't seem to have any insight into the fact that his personal aesthetic is trashy. He thought the shirt was way cool, even though everyone told him it looked like an Elvis tour costume (and that wasn't a compliment). However, it traveled well and at least he paired it with plain black pants.
Angela's outfit was simply hideous. Jeffrey hit it on the nose when he described her as an arts and crafts macaroni paster. The fact that she called the macrame flowers on her butt "signature Angela" says it all. The woman has no talent. It was weird that she seemed so excited to design her own jet-setter outfit but then admitted she had no idea what jet-setters wore. No duh! No to mention, she chose LINEN, the absolute worst fabric on creation to travel in. Linen wrinkles irreparably just walking across the room! She looked like a bag lady! And her top was just indescribably horrible. Ugly! She deserved the boot. And the good thing is that with Angela gone, there's nobody for Jeffrey to fight with, so the whole atmosphere should be more pleasant now. (I still think she and her mom were colluding to get him booted last week.)
I think unless they have an evening gown challenge next, Kayne will be the next to go, then Vincent, then either Laura or Uli. Laura could edge out Jeffrey, because she is more consistent. But Jeffrey is more creative. I think Michael will win the whole thing, but Jeffrey or even Laura could win if they really do some great stuff coming up. Uli probably won't last unless she can prove she can do something besides put a bunch of patterns together in a nice sundress.
