Radio DJ Has Callers 'Sing Like They Are Retarded'
:eyes:

<snip>

An Alliance radio station has discontinued an on-air ``Mongoloid Mike'' contest that outraged advocates for the disabled.

The contest, run by an evening DJ, asked callers to sing a song as if they were mentally retarded. Listeners would be asked to guess what the ``Mongoloid'' is singing, according to the Arc of Ohio, which supports people with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

John Stewart, program manager for WZKL (92.5-FM), said the three-minute contest ran about once a month for eight months.

Stewart said that the piece was ``a little insensitive'' and it was time to discontinue it. An on-air apology was planned for Wednesday, he said.

People from as far away as Colorado were calling the station after the Arc of Ohio e-mailed an alert to its supporters Tuesday, Stewart said.

``I don't have an opinion on it,'' Stewart said. ``If it's been going on for eight months, I don't think that our audience is offended by it.''

But Ron Klonowski Jr., executive director of the Arc of Stark County in Jackson Township, said local parents have been highly offended, believing that old stereotypes are being rehashed. Mongoloid was once an acceptable term for people with Down syndrome, but now is usually considered offensive.

``They're making light of a condition that's very serious,'' Klonowski said.

He says disabled students are already an easy target for middle school and high school bullies and he worries that the show sent the wrong message.

``It perpetuates the situation and undermines all of the work that's been done to try to eliminate that problem,'' he said.

10. Sensitivity isn't mandatory.
But a little goes a long way. When I was in radio, I tried not to do things that would piss off my listeners.

4. Matcom, all of the above and then some!
My son, 22, has mild autism and ADHD.

This insensitive A-Hole should do community service work
in a program that helps our disabled community.

God help me, I wanna slug the guy!

I know some people who have performed in this event in past years, including a young man with Down syndrome who has some wicked dance steps. You should have seen the impression Ryan made when he went out there in what looked like Seinfeld's "puffy shirt"!

And to this shock jock, and all his callers, I bequeath... a boot to the head! (Ow!)

8. Making fun of retarded people is like...
Well, honestly, I can't think of anything more childish, stupid, or innane than making fun of retarded people.

13. Yep. I can't say it any better.
And I'm tired of whiney-ass fucknozzles bawling about political correctness. Anyone who makes fun of people for something they have no control over is a colossal asshole with a tiny brain and has no business calling themselves a liberal.

11. I admit I occasionally use the phrase "that's retarded"...
...but this is beyond the pale. Shock jocks are all scumbags. Every one.

(Although I admit I loved when Johnny B made fun of Wisconsin.)
