Question from an old person.

I don't know how I've managed to live this long without knowing this information, but what's the difference between an MP3 Player and an iPod? I'm serious. I really don't know. My nephew's 16th birthday is coming up. Would you kindly help an old, crippled lady get her little nephew a birthday present, youngsters?

3. We bought my daughter the Iriver (The original MP3) player and

she loves it, as do most of her Ipod owning friends. I guess it's personal preference, but she hated the Ipod. It was cheaper too! :hi:

An iPod is a kind of mp3 player (well, sort of...it encodes files in m4a/AAC format, which is different than mp3--the AAC format is locked and copy-protected). For what it does, it's probably not worth the hefty premium you pay just because it's an Apple product.

11. No; iTunes/iPods Encode in Mp3

Apple Store files are in AAC/m4a format, but iPods play regular old mp3s just fine. I use Audacity a lot, and my iPods (a first-generation model and a latest one) have no problems with those mp3s or the ones I rip from CDs into iTunes.

As for preference, I agree - if someone likes another brand of mp3 player better, no reason not to buy it.

but unless you have a library of mp3s, which I'm assuming from the question you do not, this won't be a lot of help. I mention this because if you go to stores or online you may see something that says it's an mp3 player but looks like a Sony Discman; don't buy one of those. (I did and am delighted by it, but I do have a large library of mp3s, happily.)

iPods don't compress the files that much and sound better. In iTunes you can change the preferences to save files as AIFF (cd quality) and compress the sound files less when loading to the iPod. It sounds better. Your nephew probably knows the difference.

Go with the iPod. It's worth it.

10. Personally, I LOVE my iPod.

I've had it for almost three years and it's never given me any problems. One thing I do suggest about it is buying the AppleCare warranty, which you can get even on one of their refurbished iPods which is a great deal (check out the apple site for them). I know someone who had a messed up ipod and with the applecare, apple simply replaced it with a brand new ipod and since their model was discontinued, it even had twice the store space.

12. Same Here

I have two; a first-generation and a mini. The first generation iPod still works just fine though the Mini is my everyday 'Pod - it's got a poem written in Cocoa on the back (it was a Valentine's Day gift). I find it infinitely useful - not just for listening to stuff, but for the disk use as well.

Or, in the words of, say, a Douglas Hoffstadter, "mp3 player" is the meta-category for the category of "iPod". Hoffstadter would also add that this sentence has ten words. He'd also say that the previous sentence had ten words, and the next sentence is a lie. And then he'd say that the previous sentence is the truth.
