A question about ants
I have always battled ants in the spring and summer. Any food thatis left out on the kitchen counter or any dog food that my dogs did not finish was over-run by ants. What is strange is that this year, I have not seen even one ant. Do the ants know something we don't and are jumping ship? And I have not even sprayed for them, which I usually do in spring and summer.

1. They all went to Canada after the last general election
Lucky bastards can just tunnel under the border--no customs, no immigration bureaucrats. Just good, clean air, and lots of democracy.

3. Same here
They were all over my apartment when I moved in last October. I got them under control and then they disappeared this winter. Haven't seen 'em since.

Not that I'm complaining. ;)

4. Perhaps the old ants have been replaced by a new type?
Perhaps a species that is less prone to home-invasion? I know out here in the west, our native ants have been largely wiped out by an invasive species; unfortunately the newcomers are better than the originals at getting indoors.

5. That's weird, I was talking to hedges about this today
There's been like...2 or 3 ants in our kitchen all summer. 2 or 3. That's it. Usually if there's one there's 1000, but this year only a couple ever. Weird.

7. I ;have not even seen two or three.
And usually I have a problem with roaches, bur I have only seen a couple and they have been dead. Yes, it is weird, especially when you live in a warm climate.

6. Has the weather been different this year?
I know at my place, we tend to get ants when it gets very dry outside. They come in looking for water. During years that the water table is high, or there's unseasonable moisture, we get fewer of them.

8. It's been sort of dry, but no more so than years past

when I was overrun with them. Maybe, if we are lucky, the ant species is dying off. In fact, there were huge mounds of fire ants in my front yard and in the field where I walk my dogs and they are gone also.
