Mine is "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf" starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

There are so many more I like very much...but, this is my all-time favourite.

directed by Alfred Hitchcock is probably my second favourite. I saw this film when I was only twelve years old. Was I ever scared to take a shower after that!

Then: Notorious, Vertigo, Treasure of the Sierra Madre; & possibly Sunset Blvd. But I've skipped over all the nice Preston Sturgis comedies.

And, I love to visit Coronado and stay at the Hotel Del Coronado.
What a treat!

This is where they filmed much of the movie...and, the setting is a nostalgic step back in time.

I'd love to say that it was "Flaming Youth" from 1923, but sadly, that film is lost to time. :-(

Popcorn flicks seem to be rising to the surface on a lazy Saturday morning, so I'll stop.

"The Awful Truth" starring Cary Grant and Irenne Dunne (Irenne Dunne....sigh), which is not only my favorite B&W film but my favorite comedy film, also.

"I saw your picture in the newspapers and wondered what you look like..."

Night of the Hunter: If you haven't seen this movie, run to the video store and rent it. It's directed by the actor, Charles Laughton, and stars Robert Mitchum as an evil criminal posing as a preacher. Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish also star. Most effective use of Black & White since German expressionism. It's a dark and terrfying movie.

"M" used black and white to create a dark and sinister atmosphere. This German film came out in 1930 and I believe it was Peter Lorre's first movie. Fritz Lang directed it.

I agree with you completely..."Night of the Hunter" was a dark, terrifying movie. It showed Luaghton's talents as a director quite effectively.

the camera crew integrated natural shots of wildlife to set the mood.

The first time I saw NotH was with my dad at the Brattle Theater, which is an independent art house theater near where I grew up. I was about 10 or 11 and had NIGHTMARES for weeks. it really was that disturbing.

That may be my new favorite. Wind up the ol' flaying machine! :D

--a comedy with Henry Fonda. It's hilarious.

Starring the late Gregory Peck, a classic liberal.

Which is more watchable than Ran. I never liked King Lear that much anyway.

It's also my favorite film of all time!

Course most people were back then.

Actually they are just document signatures... could be faked... but they do match other signatures that are known to be genuine. So if they are forgeries, then they are good ones.

I'd love to find an autographed photo of Myrna Loy and William Powell.

and she worked actively w/the First Lady on Civil Rights issues, during the 40's, way before it became de rigeur to do so.

I loved Rosalind Russell. She was awesome.

And Myrna Loy and William Powell-what chemistry.

Rosalind Russell was great in Auntie Mame and Gypsy... one of her most amazing roles was with Cary Grant in "His Girl Friday"

The fast paced dialog was just amazing. Forget using closed-captioning... she goes MUCH too fast for CC to be worthwhile. It's just amazing to watch them.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky. Paranoid tale of a brilliant mathematician searching for patterns in the stock market; he is pursued and threatened by a sinister financial corporation who want his research,and a group of fanatical Hasidim who want him to find the holy unspeakable name of god for them by analysing patterns in the Torah. Much better than I've made it sound.

Also: Dr. Strangelove, Metropolis, The Great Dictator, Vertigo, Rear Window, Arsenic and Old Lace, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Schindler's List, Young Frankenstein, The Manchurian Candidate, White Heat, The Big Sleep, many many others. I have too many favourites that are too different to pick just ONE...

It has always been my favorite movie, so I realize I am a bit biased.

Buster Keaton made some brilliant movies; and there are miles of film we've never had the chance to see, but with luck, we might actually get to see the complete "Metropolis", (pieces pop up all the time in Europe).

made in 1949 is my all time favorite movie :loveya: not only in black and white but of all movies. It stars Oliva De Havilland and Montgomery Clift and is about a shy unloved wealthy woman who is courted by a fortune hunter, GREAT stuff! :bounce:

Great performances by Quinn and Tracy.

I would rate that #2 after "To Kill A Mockingbird"
