35 years ago today...
our baby girl was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin, Illinois.
I was at Miz t.'s side, which was a rare privilege back then.
Awesome!

It was hot.
No air conditioning in the hospital, our home, or even our car.
Two days later we brought her home.
She rode, not in an approved car seat, but in her mother's arms.
She slept all the way.

We got her home, gingerly carried her in, and put her on our bed.
We were clueless.
Afraid she would break.

She awoke and started to squall.
Checked her diaper (cotton, held together with huge, wicked looking "safety" pins) and it was dry.
Miz t. tried to nurse her, but she was having none of it.
Now what?

Help was on the way in the form of Miz t.'s mom, mother of six.
She was due to arrive that afternoon.
One of the hardest things I've ever done was leave that squalling baby girl and her tearful mom for the hour long drive to O'Hare.

When we walked in the house I could hear the baby crying.
"Oh, mom. Thank God you're here. What's WRONG with her?"
"Gimme that baby."
She took our daughter, draped her over one shoulder, and began to pay her firmly on the back.
In a few moments we heard a loud B-U-U-U-U-R-P!
And no more tears.
Thank God for grannies.

Our darling baby girl is 35 today.
Happily married, with a 4 year old son who is going to be an astronaut and then president of the United States.

And everybody lived happily ever after.
:-)

2. That's a sweet story, Trof
In a few minutes I will be on my way to Dayton. My first grandchild will be born later today. If the ultrasounds are correct it will be a baby girl; and as her father says, "She'll learn to fish."

Now, if Mr. cmd would just stop reading the Sunday paper and get moving. He doesn't understand how impatient I am right now. Happy birthday to your daughter and my granddaughter.:)

6. Congrats! Oh, no ultra-sound back then either. Funny story:
Our ob/gyn was Dr. Quo Chung Sun, a fairly recent immigrant to the U.S.
He was recommended by a friend, and about the only doctor in our area who would allow the father in the room at the birth.

He had a very thick accent and was difficult to understand.
After our initial visit I asked Miz t. what he had said to her during the examination.
"I have no idea. I was so nervous I just kept smiling and nodding my head."
She called the nurse and got a repeat of all the instructions as to diet, vitamins, physical activity, etc.

The nurse laughed.
"Happens all the time. I guess we should send an interpreter in with him."

After the third month, he began to predict it was a boy. I never learned what he based his prediction on, but right up until the end, he was adamant. It's a boy.
I was fairly ambivalent about choice of our baby's sex. I was mainly shooting for the right number of appendages located in their accepted places.

When our daughter finally made her appearance, Dr. Sun held her up with her backside to me.
Very slowly he turned her around, milking the suspense for all it was worth.
Girl!
He grinned and said, "Not done yet. Put back!"
Yeah. Very funny.
;-)

3. Congratulations and I hope
you print this out for your daughter! May she, her mother and you have the happiest of birthdays. Yes, thank God for Grandmas, Grannies, Nanas etc. They know just what to do.

Thank you for your tribute to your daughter, I'm a sentimental fool at times and you brought a tear to my eye.

5. what a nice story
B-U-U R-P is a sweet sound to a loving parent . I will never forget that helpless feeling of bringing home my first born , my Robin. I won't tell how many years ago (but she is past 40 ,and it does not seem possible)

10. So
this is in the new book you have decided to write?

Hey Trof.

I just replaced my twenty foot life line and air hose with a fifty footer. First time in days I made it to the front door and looked out on Henry Street. Yup! It is still there. Ten days ago I could not walk. Progress.

If it were not for our children we would not be us. Would we?
