Where's Heidi?
I haven't seen her for a while. Has she not been around, or am I being oblivious again?

2. Hey, kiddo, good to know you're still around. Must have been me,
being oblivious. As I tend to be.

4. Nah, it wasn't you.
I've been scarce. It's a busy time of year for me. Thank you for checking, my friend. :pals:

Guess what Call Me Wesley brought home Friday? A brand-spankin'-new Nikon D50. I'm a happy Heidi this weekend. :)

6. Shoot away, and have fun.
The magazines say that's a helluva camera. Now you need the legendary Nikkor 105 lens.

8. CMW has so much Nikkor glass already
that he's now going through the process of seeing what fits and what doesn't. (The D50 light-metering system doesn't work for any of our older lenses, though.) CMW's oldest Nikon body and Nikkor lenses are from about 1972 (inherited from his uncle) and the freshest are circa mid-80s. (His first apprenticeship was as a fashion photographer, hence the nice "tools." :D )

I just wanted a decent camera for making good photos of my paintings.

9. The older lenses should mount, but you might have to use manual
metering. I mentioned the 105 mm lens, because I understand that Nikon has a new version of it with an image-stabilizer, and the reports say it's as sharp as the legendary old 105.

I have never, in over 30 years of being a photographer, seen a lens as sharp as the Nikkor 105.

Unless, maybe the Pentax SMC Takumar 1.4 50 mm. That was my workhorse for many years.

10. No doubt,
when CMW reads this, we'll have a 105 by the end of the month. I personally was very impressed with the test photos he made of some of my paintings with the kit lens. It was astonishing to me to see the difference in quality between photos made with an ancient, cheap Olympus C-820L and the D50.

The lack of metering with the old lenses isn't a problem for CMW, but it would be an enormous problem for me.

11. Call Me Wesley bought you a Nikon D50?
That's what I have!

And you know how much I love mine!

I'm using my old Tamron 35-200mm lens.......and I'm happy with it!

Enjoy your new camera! It is fabulous!

12. CMW bought _himself_ a D50.
 But he'll let me use it, under close supervision. ;)

Your recommendation is one of the reasons we chose the D50. Also, we have about 10 older Nikkor lenses that work with it.

13. Has he downloaded the GIMP for you yet?

I made this to compliment the leaf photo. I plan on heading out to the woods and making a 3rd photo like this and framing them together.

14. I asked him to download it while he was fiddling around
with the new camera, and he says, "You already have Photoshop CS2. Why do you need GIMP, too?" I said, "Well, haruka has it." ;) So, no, I don't expect to get GIMP until the new wears off of the D50 and frees up a chunk of CMW's time. :eyes:

I love that image!

15. It was such a pain in the ass to do.
Edited on Sun Sep-10-06 02:04 AM by haruka3_2000
I had way less contrast than I did when I worked on the leaf, which made it hard to color within the lines of the mushroom. I spent a lot of time cursing.

One photo project that I really want to do is photographs of a stone foundation of an old cabin in the woods behind my house. The whole cabin is probably only about the size of my bedroom and it's just a stone foundation & chimney in the middle of the woods. I think it'd be cool to do a collection of photos of it from each season.

Just download GIMP yourself. I'm sure you can handle simply downloading it.

Obviously, you're a much better photographer than I am, and more experienced with post work, too. I spent part of my journalism career as a photographer, but that's a whole _other_ kind of photography.
