After college I'm moving to Hong Kong......
Edited on Sun Dec-21-03 04:37 AM by Sean Reynolds
If I don't get elected in 2005 to the Salt Lake City Council, I think I'm gonna move to Hong Kong. I want to live outside of the US for a while and HK looks like a wonderful place. I'm thinking of getting a small apartment there, a nice office job and what not.

Think it'll work? Anyone ever been to HK?

Eh, I'm tired. I probably will wake up tomorrow and want to move to London, or some other non-American city.

14. I love your glib generalizations!

How about Lieberman or Gephardt. One's a fink, the other's a capitulating coward. Yeah, they're Dems too... doesn't mean it's a good thing if they get elected!

Fuck politics, they're all nuts. Just vote for the best one and hope they do good.

I do agree though, the anti-Dean comment was pretty low-brow and inappropriate as well. I wonder if he should be alerted as well...

For the personal attack against another DUer, I'm hitting ALERT. :-(

2. Wow, you sure like flirting with dangerous regimes!
I'd love to VISIT Hong Kong, but I wonder what's going to happen if China annexes Taiwan, which is reportedly just about the only reason it treats Hong Kong with any respect.

7. What happens if China annexes Taiwan?
I think that after the Taiwanese navy blew the hell out of the PRC navy, China would go running to the UN and their new Bestest Friend, George Bush, and sue for peace.

Mainland China's navy is seriously underpowered, and Taiwan has had the benefit of 50 years of anti-Communist fundraising.

On the other hand, Hong Kong is a part of the PRC, and I don't think a major crackdown there is out of the question. All of that ... that ... that freedom!

So out of step with Asian Values. As defined by the Central Committee, of course.

4. Hong Kong is pretty crowded ...
... but still is much nicer than Shenzhen which is across the border. Crossing the border however is a nightmare. Hong Kong Immigration is pretty well organized and kept fairly clean, but the Chinese Immigration is a cluster-feck with long lines, no air conditioning and the facilities not kept up well. We stayed in Shenzhen for several nights in a rundown Chinese four-star hotel. Afterwards we stayed for several more nights at the Golden Eagle in Hong Kong. Talk about going from rags to riches.

13. I'm trying...
I just don't have the funds (or the job) to do it right now. My Canadian boyfriend (who lives in Toronto) is waiting for me.

The Canadians are much nicer. Some of the nicest people in the world, in fact. I like it up there very much.

10. Hong Kong is extremely expensive.
Hot and humid in summertime. What kind of office job are you looking for? There will be lots of competition, so your particular qualifications are crucial. Also, there is a big difference in the way the average Chinese person lives and what you are accustomed to.

16. As Long As You Realize
that one doesn't just move to a foreign country and start looking for a job. You need all kinds of permission to work in most foreign countries, and "permission" usually translates into having a skill they are short on.

17. True
In some countries you have to have a job offer before you can get a work visa.

If you really want to live in Asia, you can try teaching English, although you need to be careful, because there are a lot of unscrupulous types running English conversation schools.

Check out Dave's ESL Cafe (http://www.eslcafe.com) for job listings and stories of people's experiences.
