Poll question: Are you a total liberal stereotype?
I was just looking at my bookshelf and between the bird books, the nature essays, the poetry section, the Russian-English dictionary, the Spanish-English dictionary, the books about grammar, the books about parts of the world I have never been to, Jared Diamond, Shirley Jackson, a book on Canadian foreign policy, Tamora Pierce, Philip Pullman, and all the Harry Potter books, I just have to hang my head in shame. :(

3. So a wide variety of books is all you need to be a stereotype?

I guess that's me, then. I'm not ashamed, though.

4. Guilty as charged
I have (faux) Birkenstocks, drink latte made from my own espresso machine, have a personal library that spans all four walls of my bedroom, belong to the ACLU and DNC (among other things), contribute monthly to NARAL, know how to use spell-check, etc, etc...

7. If we're going by well-read, then yes.

However, I do have quite a bit of contradictions going on.

Stereotypically Liberal
Lesbian
Pescarian
Eats mostly organic
Reads NY Times
Owns a Swedish import (Saab)
Loves theatre & art
Starbucks addiction (triple grande organic cappucino)
Anti-War
Registered Democrat
Rescues Animals
Hates wearing shoes

Not Stereotypically Liberal
Drives a Jeep Grand Cherokee
Loves to shoot guns
Enjoys tearing around on ATVs
Support the right to boating!!!!
Blowing shit up is fun (the bigger the fireworks the better...although on the 4th, I did almost accidentally set our American flag on fire)

8. I don't get the boating one:
Are stereotypical liberals against boats? Perhaps we're just scared of water?

9. I think there was a flamewar regarding boating in GD
Luckily I missed it and just caught some of the snarkiness in the lounge afterwards.

14. Thanks - I should have learned by now that pretty much every comment
that doesn't seem to make sense can be traced back to some flame war or other...

10. There was a thread in which I was flamed because my family owns
several small motor boats (15-20' with motors between 30-225hp) and apparently, since boats use gas, I should give up boating for the sake of the planet or something. I was basically declared to be a bad liberal and a selfish person for not giving up the hobby and persuading my family to sell the boats or something. It was quite stupid. The whole thing originally came up because I said there are some legitimate reasons to own an SUV, such as living in an area with bad road conditions or if you had to tow stuff.

Anyway, it ended up being a GD thread that then got made fun of in the lounge for a day or so. Apparently, as I was getting declared a bad liberal, LynneSin was being called a "Centrist," spawning this hilarious thread. Then, Ronnykmarshall posted Boats are sooooooooo COOL! and in the end, a good time was had by all, except by the posters in GD that expect boaters to register as Republicans.

13. I should have figured... Thanks for the explanation
Personally, I plan to have myself encased in amber and get all my nourishment from the sunlight that filters through. I'll have the amber cocoon shaped like a bench so people will have a place to sit down, and from inside I'll send e-mails and money in support of every single cause that gets mentioned in GD. Maybe then I'll be only mildly objectionable to some of our more self-righteous brethren...

15. Yeah, I plan on doing that once my soul evolves beyond the hobby
of boating.

Until then, I will still be amused by taking one of our little boats up to the biggest, fanciest yacht moored in Watch Hill, RI with someone standing on deck only to say, "pardon me, but do you have any Grey Poupon?" before jetting off.

16. boats are cool!
I'm more in line with the sailboat and canoe, but I like boats of all types, since I love being on the water, period.

17. Yeah, when I lived by a lake I access to a kayak I could borrow.
I used to take it out a lot. I've never gone sailing, but I think it'd be cool to learn.

he's been doing it for about 20 years. He just bought a starter sailboat that we were going to try this weekend at a local lake.

11. Right now my reading material
is very religious--for me, that is. It's all good--and all about the "bad" fundies. I'm doing massive research to show what a bunch of dumbfucks (beginning with Pat Robertson) the fundies are, and need to read up more on all the rotten shit that fills their one, collective brain.

Other than that, I'm also reading "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" which is the book Dan Brown used extensively in his writing of the "Da Vinci Code."

So while my library has a lot of liberal stuff, it's also got a lot of stuff I wouldn't normally read, even if my life depended on it.

12. I'm hardly a "stereotype" from either end of the spectrum...
I'm pretty "liberal" on social issues, and on the "role of
Government in the 21st century"...
I am TOTALLY in support of a Living Wage for all,
Universal Healthcare, and stringing war-profiteers up
in the public square.

And I keep an UZI in the closet closest to my bed.

American car (that, incidentally, gets 40 mpg... :woohoo:), and I don't drink lattes very often. :P
