Diana was Dianer. I just heard a guy on TV talking about Fallujah and it was Fallujer. Just curious how that got started.

1. Southern English people often pronounce a as ah, sounding like r.

3. I was just thinking about this yesterday when it occurred to me...
..that Led Zeppelin was actually saying "Jamaica" when Plant sang "D'yer Ma'ker" (jhur-maker = Jamaica).

Yes? No? What's the story with that one?

4. Yes
I've been saying it for years.

6. The process is called rhotization
and it is still debated.
English and Spanish both have dialects with it.
There may be others, but these two I am aware of.

8. It's not universal, and it's due to two factors:
1. The "I sawr it" phenomenon is kind of a linking "r." You can hear it in the Northeeastern U.S.

2. The "r" of "Dianer" isn't really an "r." It's a very lax vowel that sounds like an "r" to American ears.
