Poll question: Goodbye Internet Explorer!
So, my computer is in need of a refreshing, cleansing, rejuvenating re-formating as I made the idiotic move of installing Norton System Works on my HD. As a result, my computer performance has slowed VERY noticeably.

I am going to start from scratch, only this time, I am going to give the Opera browser a try. I've heard good things about it and can't wait to try it out.

1. I've got Opera but I prefer Firefox.
Both are good bets though.

2. Use Firefox. I've tried Opera, but I prefer Firefox.
Also, you'll still need to keep IE on your computer, because Windows requires it for some stuff.

3. Opera is good, but I prefer Firefox, personally.
Dumping IE is a very smart move though.

4. Firefox...
I do believe Opera costs money. Why pay for something, when you can get it better for free? Firefox is really nice- and the 2.0 beta is supposed to handle RSS like a charm

9. I swear, I don't know what I did before I got Adblock.
I'm on dial-up, living in the sticks. And ads made surfing so much slower.
Adblock has made life much more pleasant on my slooow InternetS highway. :)

12. Use Firefox
because of the extentions.

You still need IE every so often for Windows/Office updates so you still need it. You also cannot delete it from your system.

17. A different sort of "other"
I've been using Firefox since before it was considered stable, and before that I primarily used Netscape. So, obviously I'd suggest at least trying Firefox. I have tried Opera in several of its incarnations, and the most recent one is the best so far. I'm still not quite comfortable with it and don't like the way it presents some things, which is one of the reasons I stay primarily with Firefox. (The other is that I've become something of an OSS devotee and stay away from closed-source software as much as possible.) That is, if I don't like something about Firefox, I typically can change it via extensions. If I want a feature it doesn't have, I can usually find some implementation of that feature and add it. Opera seems generally to have better performance, but it's not quite as configurable.

In any case, here's the different part.

Don't limit yourself to trying or using any one piece of software, especially something like a web browser, multiple versions of which can exist on a system at the same time without any issues. I can think of half a dozen browsers off the top of my head. I suggest trying at least three or four of them. I currently have five browsers installed on my system. I use Firefox most of the time, but I also use Konqueror (Linux only) and Opera quite a bit. On my Windoze system I even still use IE occasionally when visiting certain websites.

The point is not to limit yourself, and maybe I'm being a bit too long-winded about this, but the way the question is presented and often answered leaves an assumption of needing to find one thing and stick with it. The corporate types in the technology industry want you to think that way. Don't. It's your system. Use it the way you want.

18. Hold off on Firefox for a bit.
There's currently a big security hole in it that it's going to take awhile to fix. Until they do, be very careful about using it. Opera is probably the way to go, in the short term, at least.
