Question for the cat lovers
Assume you suddenly got a whole lot of cash and wanted to set up a cattery. What breed of cat would you specialize in?

Mutts.
I wouldn't breed. I'd make it a permanent shelter for any cat without a home.

2. Siamese
I love mine so much, loving, energetic, funny, talky. I'd like to breed some that are classic Siamese. Seems people either go modern or apple-head, I like the classics like mine.

3. I wouldn't. I'd buy a farm and support orphaned cats.
But that's because to me, cats are people rather than 'business inventory'.

12. I'm with you
...I can't imagine keeping kitties in cages and using them as kitten factories. I have two designer cats who were rescued, though.

If I wanted to do amateur breeding and keep the whole menagerie underfoot, I'd choose Himalayans for the wonderful temprament or Maine Coons for the clownlike dispositons. If I turned into a Republican, I'd breed Bengals (the designer cats, not the wild animal). They're rare enough to be sought after and very expensive.

4. spaying clinic
More important NOT to breed cats. Although I do have a fondness for Burmese.

5. Not breed, but color: CALICO!
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 02:30 PM by patsified
I've always adored calicos, regardless of breed. It would be so neat to have a cattery with all the little tri-colors running around, batting catnip mice. Thanks for the fantasy, LOL! Here's one of my calicos, Sybil:

EDITED TO ADD C'mon, this is a fantasy, where all cats have loving homes waiting for them! There's no room for doom and gloom in a fantasy!

15. That is one adorable furrball!
Well, if we're talking fantasy here--and with the clear understanding that this wouldn't apply to our nasty real world--then I'd raise African Wild Cats, the genetic ancestor of all the cats we share love and lives with.

African Wild Cats (felis sylvestris lybica) are an endangered species precisely because they can and do mate easily with domestic cats, so the original gene pool is being lost. They range in colour from tan to grey, and the tabby-striped ones can easily be mistaken for their genetic descendents, the shorthaired tabby, except that they're slightly larger.

6. tough question.
Edited on Tue Dec-23-03 02:30 PM by tkulesa
I would really really want to get a whole lot of Maine Coons.

However, I know I'd probably end up taking in a lot of strays and rescued animals.

Edit to correct spelling.

8. Hey tkulesa
The father of my kitty Sybil (above) was a Maine Coon, her mom was a Bombay... some combo!
