1. I have a Vaio in the other room....
It's decent and reliable, but nothing to call home about. It's well built and about what you expect from an OEM. I'd give it about a 7/10.

3. Decent and reliable is about all I'm after
Don't really need any gigantic workstation capacity or mega-powerful graphics programs, just a reasonably speedy and reliable home system.

I went out computer window-shopping today, and the Sony models I saw seemed like a pretty good mid-range (non-Celeron!) way to go. But, of course, I'll wait until January for the post-Christmas sales!

2. Sony PC Experience
I have a sony Vaio at home and I really like it. I've had it for about 1 year. The only downside is that the front usb ports are on the very bottom of the tower and have a cover so opening them is a little weird because the case did not give the cover room to open.

My friend has a sony laptop and it is very NICE!

If you have any sony perphials (ie sony palm pilot, digital camera) the sony might come with the memory stick reader built in. I think the newer models have all the media readers built in so that might be moot.

Before the sony I had a compaq--upgrading memory/video was HIDEOUS--the case was too small.

At work, we have purchased gateways--tech support was BLAH and 1 out of the 3 had a hard drive problem. Dells are better but cost more than sony.

Anyway, I'd recommend the Sony--it worked great out of the box and I haven't had to mess with it too much.

5. love my VAIO laptop
It's four years old and has been to Guatemala where I did research for a year and a half in a very dusty environment and I haven't ever had a problem. The thing has been dropped and survived shakey Central American bus journeys too. I've never had a more reliable laptop (and I've had many).

6. Thanks for the help, y'all!
It's down to a steel-cage deathmatch between Sony and Dell, to be decided a day or two after Christmas.

7. Sony VAIO desktop-- like it fine
Got it a couple years ago rebuilt through UBid; you might want to check to see if they're still showing up there. You can get a substantial discount if you bid intelligently.

8. Take it from a computer technician....
Sony computers are crap. They are over priced and their style is basically a cheap immitation of a mac. They break fairly often in my experience and prove to be difficult to work with.

Do one of the following...

1. Build your own if you want to put alittle effort into it.

Good sites to help with that:

www.tomshardware.com

www.arstechnica.com

www.anandtech.com

www.pricewatch.com

www.newegg.com

2. Buy from Dell or Gateway. You will get a decent computer most likely. You will get shoddy support, but its a hell of alot better then Sony.

3. Buy from Alienware. More expensive, but you will get a quality computer.

www.alienware.com

Again, avoid Sony computers like the plague. I would only rate packard bell as a worse computer manufacturer, and they went out of business.
