after puppies are born, how long before they start running around?
A female dog started hanging around here a few weeks ago. I've been feeding her. And now she's gone and had puppies under my shed.

It's been a real long time since I was a puppy daddy. Can someone refresh my memory? How long will it be before the pups come of their disclosed location?

I'm looking forward to seeing them, but I have no idea what I'm going to do with a litter of puppies.

Thanks.

1. You're just dyin' to play with 'em, aren't you?
I would be, too, and I have absolutely no idea how long it will be. :hi:

3. Yeah, I'd love to just get a peek at 'em
I'd love to keep them all, but I don't know how many there are. And I can't afford to feed eight big doggies. :hi:

7. Well, the pups might want to peek at their new daddy, too, but...
their eyes don't open for 12-14 days. Methinks they will become very mobile right after that.

2. I have no idea how long it takes before they start running around.
A couple weeks I guess. They can't go to a new home until they're about 8 weeks. I'd start trying to find homes for them soon, that way you can screen the people a bit. Also, see if there's any free/low-cost spay programs around. The mom's just going to end up getting pregnant again otherwise.

4. thanks!
You give good advice. The Humane Society does good, important work, but I don't want to take them there for obvious reasons.

Don't give the puppies away for free. It's sick, but there are bunchers out there that look for ads giving away free pets to sell them to animal research facilities, plus people that use them as bait dogs to train fighting dogs. Basically, just make sure there is some sort of adoption fee involved. Make it just the cost involved in getting them their puppy shots & a dewormer, and tell the adopter that's what the fee is for. Anyone who is serious will pay it.

As for the mom, I say she decided to adopt you for a reason. Just get her spayed and you've got a new pet.

6. again good advice
But rather than charge people to adopt them, I'll, at first anyway, just try to make sure that I'm dealing with decent people. Thanks for the input!

9. It will be a bout a month before they are at the curious, getting into
stage. I remember Jessie's breeder sending us videos of her as a pup and the first four weeks were basically rumbling around on the blanket.

Have fun!!!

11. Pet adoption groups
are great resources for helping you find QUALIFIED new owners AND helping to get those all important vaccinations and spay/neutering.

Check here for a group near you - or call your local Pet Smart to see if there's an adoption group that meets there.
