Lawmaker Can't Find Spinach To Celebrate Spinach Safety

SALINAS, Calif. -- A California congressman who tried to stage a public spinach-eating news conference to demonstrate that leafy greens are safe again ran into a bit of a problem -- no spinach.

U.S. Rep. Sam Farr scrapped his plan in Salinas Tuesday after he couldn't find any spinach in local grocery stores. It seems the stores still aren't comfortable stocking the stuff after a nationwide E. coli outbreak.

On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration lifted its two-week-old consumer warning on most fresh spinach.
