He was angry, he kicked ass, and he was NOT that SuperFriends wienie

That's the Levitz-Conway-Aparo Aquaman, back when comic books weren't snuff film story boards.

20. i liked things like "weird war tales"
Edited on Thu Oct-05-06 06:29 AM by datasuspect
and those very strange comics from the early 70s that talked about demonic possession, alien abductions, and other weird shit.

i remember when i was about 10 years old i discovered the OUTRAGEOUS world of bill gaines "EC" comics. my dad would take me downtown to some comic book store on michigan ave. where they had all kinds of old shit, and i found some vintage (this was in 1980, so the books had to go back to the 50s) "mad" and ec books.

some ec themes (from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EC_Comics)

EC's most common 'house plot' was to take an ordinary situation and turn it on its head in gruesome fashion, oftentimes as poetic justice for a character doing something wrong. For example the story Collection Completed features a man who takes up the hobby of taxidermy to bug his wife. When he kills and stuffs her beloved cat, the wife snaps and kills him, stuffing and mounting his body as he did to so many animals before. The story Revulsion contains a spaceship pilot bothered by insects due to an experience in his past when he found a bug in his food. By the end of the story a giant alien insect screams in horror when he finds the dead pilot in his salad. This type of theme appeared in dozens of stories and covered all sorts of situations imaginable. Dissection, the broiling of lobsters, Mexican jumping beans, fur coats, and fishing are just a small sample of the kind of themes that these types of stories were built around.

The 'Grim Fairy Tale', which appeared almost exclusively in EC's horror comics featured gruesome twists on common fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood and many others.
Adaptations of Ray Bradbury stories appeared frequently in EC comics starting in 1952. The never ending need for material led to a humorous incident where Feldstein and Gaines combined 2 of Bradbury's stories into a single one for one of their science fiction comics. Learning of the story, Bradbury sent a note praising them, while remarking that he had "inadvertently" not yet received his payment for their use. Charmed and relieved, EC happily sent a check and began a productive series of Bradbury adaptations.

Stories with a political message became common in EC's science fiction and suspenstory comics. Issues including racism, lynching, anti-semitism, police corruption were just a small sample of those featured.

And all the other dwellers in what Wikipedia calls "The Scrooge McDuck Universe"

Of course, I read Superman, Batman & the rest of the DC gang. But also loved The Fantastic Four & their Marvel compatriots. (Yeah, if I'd saved them all....)

Years later, I met this guy in my kid brother's hot rod magazines.

The Joker had his own comic for about nine or ten issues. Dr. Doom was hilariously evil. I loved his insults towards his foes, especailly when he would call someone a "dolt." There's something about that word that cracks me up.

55. Man, I was a weird kid--I used to love old issues of Uncle Creepy,
Cousin Eerie--I was all about that kind of "Twilight Zone", "Tales of the Darkside" type of story-telling. I didn't read conventional "hero" comics regularly until I was in my late teens, and I think I loved anti-heroes and conflicted villians better than regular "good guys". I *liked* Magneto, and when I read the revamped "X-factor" series in oh, about 1991-93, I really liked the team of Havok, Quicksilver, Rahne, Polaris, Multiple Man, and Strong Guy, because they all seemed kind of flawed (my fav issue was where they were all psychoanalyzed.) I guess I like the mutant concept generally--feeling like an outcast, learning to develop your talent and be yourself.
