Poll question: Do you put your groceries into a "bag" or a "sack"?
Every other place I've lived, people said "bag." Here in Oregon, people say "sack." I have to say, it sort of bugs me ... My native-born Oregonian kids say "sack." Noooooo!

24. "Poke" -- That's even funnier than "sack."
I guess "pig in a poke" refers to a porcine animal in a bag? I always pictured a poke like some sort of little corral or pen.

26. paper bag/sack -- water bucket/pail -- seesaw/teeter-totter -- etc
These are all vocabulary pairs that used to be used to determine the geographical region of the country the speaker was/is from. Now people move/have moved so much these pairs are much less valid.

Other vocabulary questions

--do you say fry pan/skillet/frying pan/spider (supposedly originally Maine and NE?)

--soda/soda pop/pop/soft drink?? In TX, parts of OK, and ?? people ask 'what kind a coke do you want? 7-Up, root beer,....?'

--glove compartment/glove box?

--the boonies/the boondocks/the tuilies (?)/??

******

I remember the fun I had the summer of 1961 when I was with students from around the country. There I learned the 'strange' vocabulary around Boston-----tonic for pop, some strange word for milk shake, etc.

******

Anyone know what 'pie plant' is?? It's used by older people from NE, IA, ?? for rhubarb.

******

'I'll pick you up for church' may be said as 'I'll carry you to church' by older people who grew up in MS. (I remember the pleasure I had when I heard someone actually say this 'in captivity' as it were.)

29. Couch/sofa/davenport also vary
I use couch, mostly, but sofa isn't completely foreign to me. My Ohio-born grandmother always said "Davenport." I guess it stems from the furniture-making industry in Davenport, Iowa.

Grandma also said "oleo" instead of butter, but that's a generational thing dating from WWII.
