Sweet..... Bob Rock is gone. Rick Rubin producing new Metallica album!
Finally, a good producer, after 15 years of Bob Rock. Hopefully they can redeem themselves, even though they're a little long in the tooth for teen angst-rock.

1. Say what you will about Bob Rock's production skills...
But the album he did with Paul Hyde ("Under The Volcano") back in the 80s is absolutely freakin' spectacular.

2. He did a couple of albums with Hyde...
...back when they were "The Payola$". Their first album, "In a Place Like This", is a masterpiece of post-punk.

Rock is a better musician than a producer.

Personally, I'm pretty excited about Rubin's involvement; he's one of my favourite rock producers, along with Steve Albini and Butch Vig.

5. Oh yeah...I love that album! I didn't know that Bob Rock had anything
to do with it.

6. Yeah, I have some Payola$ stuff as well...
...but this was just credited to the two of them. I saw them open for The Hooters in...oh, 1986 or 1987. Should have been a huge hit.

8. Technically that was a Payola$ album....
.... but basically Rock and Hyde took Dick Clark's advice to lose the name "Payola$" if they wanted to crack the US market. Clark said that too many programmers would want to avoid anything to do with the word "Payola".

28. See, I never knew that...
Also looks as though they've started to work on a reunion album.

27. Rock is a prick. When he started making big money as a producer

He dropped Hyde like a bad habit and Hyde
needed a break.

I dated Rock's sister once and she told me
she thought BR was a prick for dropping Hyde.

Plus he was a serial philanderer who never met
a women that didn't get pregnant by him after
a short introduction.

3. I don't think he's bad, but I partly agree
I love Bob Rock's work with Veruca Salt and Nina Gordon, and he produced Metallica's Black Album, which is good. But I do think Metallica needs a change, and Rick Rubin has mostly been on a roll lately. He'd be a good one to get them out of a rut.

4. Even if he weren't a great producer
I would still have to dig someone who looks like this

And has Johnny Cash and Danzig on his label. That is one of the sweetest things ever.

9. wow. that should be interesting.

neither Rubin nor Metallica have done anything noteworthy in a decade. It's like complimentary washed out artists, cant wait to see what happens! They can call the album 1986 or something, to hearken back to the days when they were both relevant!

18. i've only heard that single they have with the video. But i have to admit
it's a great jam, very passionate. I won't ever disparage the DC's, they are definitely solid.

Edited on Mon Oct-09-06 06:07 PM by mvd
There's so much country I like where I have to stomach their political views - The DCs are refreshing. Yes, they are more pop and rock now, but they didn't leave the country sound behind completely.

:hi:

I assume you have. Very good stuff there. Son Volt's first album is one of my all time favorites.

11. Careful. They'll sue you for using their name.
:eyes: Metallica used to be a good band, but then it got to be all about making money, and I started hating them. Musicians should care about two things: The music and their fans. All they care about is the money. There is no redemption for them in my opinion. Our local rock station renamed them "Old Greedy Balding Bastards". They're done, tired, need to go away.

19. I'm usually not into the "they sold out" thing, but..
I really do not think Metallica has done anything good for a while. Then they were at the forefront of the anti-P2P movement.

21. i wouldn't say they are beyond redemption.
one thing that was interesting about their Napster era embarassment, was that they were really voicing a lot of artists' concerns, other artists were sort of content to sit on the sidelines though and not get labelled as moneywhores.

I was a huge Metallica fan, and they have run their course.

Their past 2 albums sucked.

26. I partially agree
St. Anger is absolute dreck. I've tried to listen to it, but haven't even made two complete passes yet.

But anybody who recorded "Whiplash", "Fade to Black", and "Damage Incorporated" shouldn't be completely written off.
