Resume Objectives, yes or no?

I am updating my resume and I'm hearing more frequently that an Objective is not necessary, or may even be harmful, any opinions appreciated :-)

1. Skip it

My wife is a former HR person. Skip it, it's filler. If it's a big company you're applying to the resume will just get scanned into a database and later refound via keyword searchs. Make sure you use 10 or 12 point Times New Roman and white paper to facilitate this and include your buzzwords. Seriously.

For smaller places without a dedicated HR staff more personal touches are more important since you'll end with the hiring manager being involved in screening the resumes. In that case the objective line won't hurt. Same with the cover letter, it'll get read much more frequently at a smaller outfit.

2. Not necessary.

Resumes should be tailored to the job for which you're applying . . . one size does not fit all.

(Former HR manager here - admittedly "out of the loop" for the past 5 years.)

3. no need for it and I was lucky to get everything on one page

without it. Had to play around with my font and margins to get it all to fit...

7. I personally think that unless you are a Nobel Prize winner or

you know REALLY SOMEBODY that you need to condense to one page...you only have like 2.3 seconds to grab their attention and I doubt they flip to the second page within that time frame...

just my .02

I would be intersted in other opinions and thoughts on the subject...

13. 2 is fine but get the best stuff on the first third of the first page

If you haven't grabbed their attention by then, they won't be going to the end of the first page, never mind the second. 2 pages is standard these days. I think the one page thing dates back to when a person had one job for their whole life. :)

Oh, and no on the objectives. Time was when an employer actually cared about what you were looking for in life and work. Now it's wise to remember, it's not about what they can offer you but what you can offer them.

14. My resume consultant told me 2 is okay.

She said that if you're over the age of 30, you probably have enough work experience to justify using two pages, if necessary.

Two pages is better than squeezing too much onto one (or worse, over-editing in order to fit onto one).

6. Yes

It's the one line on your resume that's easiest to gear to the specific job you're applying for. Read the help ad, and if it says teamwork, use that word in your objective; if it says, fast-paced, use that; if it says creative, use that; if it says all of those, use all of them; etc.

8. What my career counselors have told me is that if

you are applying for a job then it's obvious your objective is to get that job. So I don't have it on mine. What I have instead is a "profile" section and underneath a "Core Skills" section. Then your job experience. I have had good results with mine.

9. Objectives are better covered in a Cover Letter

and that way you can more easily customize what you say for each prospective employer.
